One of my colleagues uses a piece of freeware called PrintKey2000 to
generate screenshots. As I recall, you can configure it to use any
otherwise unused key combo as the hotkey.

It's possible that your friend uses something like that.

Agreed, that sounds a likely explanation.

For example I use Macro Express Pro (MEP) which allows such keystroke changes. In
MEP I see that I have three macros activated by F12, All are 'scoped' so that they
work only if specific programs have focus. But many others are global. And several
of those are simple mappings to another key for convenience.

Not sure why F12 would be any more convenient than PrtScr though, an inch away?

See https://www.guildcafe.com/access-ste...ot-folder.html That
might be what's happening.

This does not seem likely.* My impression is he is talking about his
work computer, and he's a Farmer's agent.

No, it is the Steam overlay's default key is F12.

Take a Screenshot Using Steam’s Shortcut

If you’re playing a game on Steam, you can use the screenshot feature
built into Steam’s overlay to snap a picture of what’s on your screen.
Press the “F12” key on your keyboard to take a screenshot. You’ll hear
a shutter sound and a “Screenshot saved” notification will appear at
the bottom right corner of your screen.

I won't mention some add-ons in FF that does the same thing because of
your low intelligence. Some Add-Ons are not safe in the hands of people
who are stupid or completely idiot!!.

I guess he's not using the Windows 10 "Game Bar", which is capable of
taking screenshots and/or video captures of the screen. I believe those
features both need a qualifying key to go along with F12, for example.

Bring up the Game Bar by pressing Win+G.

He was "half wrong" about the F12 key.

He's got one of the spiffy keyboards that will changer your tires, if
you want it to. LOL The F12 key is labeled print, and prints his
documents. It does not do Print Screen.

On the plus side, for me, I got through using the Snipping Tool for
screenshots before the presentation went off the rails. He likes that
for what he can use it for, and it's not pinned to his taskbar! LOL

While I was there, I showed him the Windows key + Print Screen key,
don't know if he'll use that feature or not.

Ctrl+F12 is the Irfanview setting to get a screenshot.

My Irfanview is Ctrl + F11, I believe.* But it's configurable, anyway.

He may have remapped F12 as printscreen using a program such as Key
Tweak.

Rene

F11 was already in use when I installed Irfanview. It's used by a
systray utility that opens the DVD tray.
Irfanview (marvellous program! Good programmer/s) recognised that, and
so used F12.

It is!!!* Far more capable than anything I use it for.

Me too. It's been available for ages, together with other things like
Sequoiaview and Macrium Reflect.
I like to see them as the grand old days of early Net; when you gained
an MA or PhD for your pains, and then released your efforts to the world
for free.
No more! These days you release something for free, wait a bit, get
sponsorship for advertising, incorporate it, and then charge for an
update to the Pro version; which will perform near miracles of goodness
as well as flash fewer ads.
