Default JRE 8?

Hi All,

I noticed that JAVA 8 is ready to go.

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/ja...s-2133155.html

Is JRE 8 ready for prime time or would you stick with 7 for now?

Many thanks,
-T

My primary reference is the Java installation test at
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp, which says my Java 7
u60 (7.0.600.19) is the current version. I also look at the "Java
Downloads for All Operating Systems" page at
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp, which says "Recommended
Version 7 Update 60".

I am not sure I will want Java 8. Java 7 gives me the option to run an
unsigned Java applet from a Web site after I whitelist the site. I
understand that Java 8 will block all unsigned applets and not give the
user any option.

Hi David,

Thank you!

I wonder if signed java will cut down on viruses? Bad
guys will probably just sign the stinkers.

JRE 8 is mainly for developers right now. Some who tried it when it was
originally released found that it didn't work with some web sites,
particularly those that use Java for Internet speed tests (which are
more accurate and offer more information than Flash-based tests.)

I'm running Java 8u5 and you can still whitelist pages on the Security
tab of the Java Control Panel.

Java is used on two Web pages that I frequently visit. One page is an
entertaining game of no consequent. The other page is a color-picker
that I use while creating Web pages.
