Default Driver for ZyXEL G-220V3 USB/Wireless Adapter?

I am trying to re-do a DELL DIMENSION E521 PC with W7 for a friend.
She says she had it working fine with her ZyXEL G-220V3 wireless
router when the PC had MS Vista on it. But wouldn't you know her
Vista stopped working for other reasons - worst thing being Internet
Explorer (seem to be many complaints on that one).

Anyway, I can't get her adapter to work. It needs a driver of course,
and one didn't activate with this W7 installation. Does anyone know
of a driver for this adapter for W7? I can't find one - and of
course, I am finding it almost impossible to work around the deluge of
sites wanting me to buy driver softwares. I have tried the ZyXEL
site, but did not see anything.

Thanks.

She does not have the instalation CD, but since it is from Verizon, I
told her to get one. The site does say the adapter will run on W7.

I know you think I didn't do my job, but believe me, I did try to find
a site providing a download of the installation CD. I could not find
one. All I keep getting are sites that want to sell me downloaders.
If U can find a download site for an image of the installation CD I
will put U in my will.

Thanks anyway

Different browsers in different countries show different web sites.
If you go to zyxel ftp site they have drivers for download.
Nothing for V3 though. Odd, since it is the mfg site.
ftp://ftp2.zyxel.com/
What many of us do is install closely related drivers until
we find one that works. It may not say W7, but sometimes XP will
work, sometimes not.

It was stated it's a Dell and I've found they're pretty good at having
drivers for their systems online. I'd assume they'd have one for that
specific pc. Just go to their site and enter the "specific code" on the
label on the pc into appropriate box and whatever page it is and you
should be able to get drivers for all the hardware came with it from
there. I assume the network card being used is on-board as nothing else
was stated. If it's an add-on card begs question why use that over
onboard?

The Zyxel file is from 2006 or so.

I could find a reference to this instead. When you click this link,
the download will start immediately.

http://www.verizon.net/vonads/zyxel/default.asp

As referenced in the last post here.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/265159-45-zyxel

Inside the G220.ZIP file, you find several folders. It
looks like they cheated, and just copied the Vista folder
to the Windows 7 folder.

The driver is a "raw" driver. You will find six files
in the folder. There is a set of three files for a
32 bit OS. There is a set of three files for a 64 bit OS.

10/28/2008 01:19 AM 8,596 WlanGZGV32.cat
10/28/2008 01:19 AM 7,652 WlanGZGV32.inf
10/28/2008 01:19 AM 873,472 WlanGZGV32.sys

10/28/2008 01:19 AM 8,596 WlanGZGV64.cat
10/28/2008 01:19 AM 7,686 WlanGZGV64.inf
10/28/2008 01:19 AM 1,041,920 WlanGZGV64.sys

Identify the OS type (32 bit or 64 bit). Look in the
System control panel, if you need inspiration. I can
never remember the command line way (sysver?).

If you right-click WlanGZGV32.inf and select "Install"
from the menu, that installs the driver. That will not
make an entry in Programs and Features. If you don;t
like the driver, you could always use Device Manager,
navigate to the wireless entry, and select the option
to rollback the driver. Rolling back the driver can
be done to a "level of one" only. You can remove the
last driver that way, if you want or need to. In your
case, that should leave you with nothing.

*******

OK, so what's wrong with that method ? No utility for
controlling it and setting it up. But Windows has
its own setup utility for Wireless. It was called
Wireless Zero Config, but they keep changing the name,
so in Windows 7 it is likely to be something else.

http://en.community.dell.com/support...ows-7windows-8

Start : services.msc (Services plugin opens...)
WLAN AutoConfig
Startup type : Automatic
Click the Start button

That's in case WLAN AutoConfig is not running.

Then from here...

http://www.sevenforums.com/network-s...ndows-7-a.html

"If you have a router, you need to setup a wireless network first.

[Connect to router with Ethernet cable, from a working machine,
and follow the instructions that came with the router, to set it up.]

Start the WLan AutoConfig service so your W7 can use wireless
(and make sure your laptop wireless switch is also switched ON).

Once started, W7 will automatically search and detect your
wireless network (SSID). You need to log onto this network."

So the process is not super-convenient, but maybe you
can cobble together a solution.

*******

Note - when a company makes three versions of the same product,
the chipset is different in each one. They simply buy the cheapest
chip they can find, and give the product a "version" number.

If the above driver package doesn't work or WLAN AutoConfig
can't find a Wifi, or if there is no Wifi entry in Device Manager,
then it's possible the driver is wrong for your version of
G220 dongle. So don't be surprised if this doesn't work. When
they keep changing the chipset on people, there are bound
to be side effects (unhappy users). This is why you really
have to hold onto the CD that came with the thing - even if
the drivers on the CD are too old, look at the contents of the
INF file in Notepad, and the VID:PID numbers tell you what
chipset it is. If you download a separate driver package,
you expect to see the same VID:PID numbers in the INF file
on the newer driver.

Paul

How many people's pc have I repaired in some manner that don't have the

I have a suspicion in this case the original disc wouldn't
help. It may have been delivered with WinXP as the "current OS".
Then you end up having to look around a bit to find a Vista
or later driver.

I just took a look at the .sys file in the driver package,
and it's Atheros branded. So that Zyxel has some sort
of Atheros chipset. But I can't guess at much more than that,
as Zyxel used a custom VID:PID (instead of letting the
device report the Atheros info).

It's possible some utility from Linux can probe that thing
and give more details about what it is.

Yes it is a Dell (E521).
I have used Dell's so-called SVC TAG method to download/install
drivers many times, and that technique usually is a God-send. This
time is no different, at least for this PC, and the way it came -
namely with an ON-BOARD network capability. And that works fine.

Why then, is my friend going to a wireless USB adapter? Because she
can't run CAT5 cabling 75 feet from front room to back room where the
router is.

Thanks to another poster, I did get to download, unzip, and install a
so-called 'G-202_5.20.zip' file that at least seemed to correct the
Device Manager error for the adapter, and connect the adapter to my
router. At least it asked me for my WEP key. After entering that, a
full-strength set of 'bars' show on my PC task bar.

But - after I disconnect my CAT5 cabling in order to simulate my
friend's situtation, , I now cannot connect to the web. Not with
Internet Explorer, Google, or Live Mail.

Instead I get the 'Windows Network Diagnostic' amd the IE message that
it cannot display the web page. When I do what the Diagnostic says,
including off-ing and on-ing the router, it does no good, saying it
cannot correct my network connectivity issues.

I am thinking something is wrong with the properties I have set for my
connection. Right-clicking on the network 'bars' in the Windows task
bar seem to show a good connection with IPv4 Connectivity 'enabled'
with 'sent and receive' activities. When I click on 'Wireless
Properties', I see:

Network Type Access point available to all users (seems proper)
with 'connect automatically when this network is in range' checked
(seems proper).
Security Type - 'no authentication' (is this correct ???)
Encryption Type 'WEP' (seems proper)
Router key is correct

So I am stuck it would seem. So I am begging.

Oh boy!

I had a brainstorm, and tried installing the same driver for this

Well, guess what? It installed and works just fine. I unzipped and
installed the driver the same way - at least that was my intention.
So now I am really stuck.

Anyone suggest anything now?

time is no different, at least for this PC, and the way it came -
namely with an ON-BOARD network capability.

If you go to zyxel ftp site they have drivers for download.
Nothing for V3 though. Odd, since it is the mfg site.

What many of us do is install closely related drivers until
we find one that works. It may not say W7, but sometimes XP will
work, sometimes not.

It was stated it's a Dell and I've found they're pretty good at having
drivers for their systems online. I'd assume they'd have one for that
specific pc. Just go to their site and enter the "specific code" on the
label on the pc into appropriate box and whatever page it is and you
should be able to get drivers for all the hardware came with it from
there. I assume the network card being used is on-board as nothing else
was stated. If it's an add-on card begs question why use that over
onboard?

Yes it is a Dell (E521).

Just a side note concerning running Ethernet devices without running
Cat?? wire around. They have these Power Ethernet adapters now that are
relatively inexpensive. I bought a pair on Ebay that will run 500mbps
with AES128 encrytion for $20. The ones I bought we

brite view bvp-5100d ethernet

Mine (which were rather cheap and old) allows Ethernet connects at 10 or
100 mbps.

They have units that go up to 1Gbit and can run multiple concurrent units.

For me its a way better option than wireless, speed wise and no wiring.

I do that. It works fine for me too.
