OK - yup... still running XP and Outlook Express.
SO - getting forced to migrate to Win7,

Why not thunderbird? I use it and like it. It has a good newsgroup
access as well.

I like Dialog, and I sort of like MesNews. I haven't tried either under
Win8.

You will get many different suggestions that work in Win7, and with any
luck, many that work in Win8 as well. Try some that look OK to you and
pick the one you like the best. It's very much an individual matter.

I like the multi tab feature,
while I'm composing email...
I can open another (sent or received) and refer to it if necessary.

And it's FREE. Go to http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/.

I recommend trying Firefox and Thunderbird with lightning. Per recent
articles Firefox is the fastest browser out now.

Thunderbird can handle email and newsgroups, and can be configured to do
what you want. Lightning is a good way to schedule events and task,
and notify the participant whatever scheduling program they are using

Same. All you want to do is to post questions to these newsgroups so WLM is
pretty good for it and it winds some people here at the same time. Of
course that is the reason to come to these newsgroups. Ask Shadow about
this.

Kill two birds with one post!!!

LOL don't be silly.

0.139 might be, but 0.135 and a dozen or so earlier versions are fine for
XP.
