Random "A network cable is unplugged" Errors
Configuration: Pentium III 600Mhz, 384MB RAM, WindowsXP Pro, IE 6, Belkin
F5D7230-4 Wireless/Cable Gateway Router, and DSL. This machine is plugged into (via cable) the router. There is a laptop that operates on the wireless side that does not have this problem. These machines and network were operating flawlessly since installation of the network which was about 3 months before the problem appeared. Error message "A network cable is unplugged" appears on an intermittent basis. The network does becomes unavailable while this error is present. When the error dissapears the network is usually available to Outlook and IE. I say "usually" because sometimes the behavior is such that it rapidly bounces back and forth between the two messages above and there is no time for anything to re-establish connectivity with internet sites. There is a workaround that sometimes corrects the problem. I go to "LAN Connection 3" Properties - Configure - Advanced - LinkSpeed/Duplex Mode and select "10 Half Mode". Sometimes this requires a reboot of the system to take effect. Sometimes a reboot of the system itself will correct the problem. However, both "fixes" are temporary and last anywhere from a few minutes to several days. When in the "A network cable is unplugged" state, if a "Repair" (rightclick the network icon and leftclick "Repair") is attempted, it will pause for some time then come back with an error message with words to the efffect that it was unable to obtain an IP address and to contact the LAN administrator. What seems so strange to me is that the laptop on the wireless connection is completely oblivious to this. I've replaced the "cable" in question. Though extremely annoying this is not a show stopper. If I have to I can revert back to dial-up to get mail. But the lady of the house has no patience for this kind of nonsense and well... Any ideas? Anyone? Thanks, Dave M. |

Random "A network cable is unplugged" Errors
Here's an exampler of the error I get when reading this news group and the
"A network cable is unplugged." error appears. "Header download for the 'microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web' folder did not complete. Account: 'msnews.microsoft.com', Server: 'msnews.microsoft.com', Protocol: NNTP, Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E" If I do nothing and retry a download after the error dissapears on its own accord, all works OK. Random "A network cable is unplugged" Errors
Bad power can sometimes do this by transiently upsetting a switch or
router - it appears that these can be very sensitive to relatively minor power line glitches. I have a home network with up to five systems ("up to" because it depends on whether my sons are home from College) on a Belkin 8-port switch. Our local power does have intermittent problems (mainly brownouts). I have my system and the switch in my office on a UPS. Despite this, when there is a power problem and the UPS takes over, the lights on the switch flicker and the "Network Cable is unplugged" error appears and disappears. Everything else on the UPS chugs along happily. Random "A network cable is unplugged" Errors
Peter,
Your experience, coupled with another tip in a MS knowledge base piece recommended by an MVP in this group, (configure to allow PC take control of power to the ethernet adaptor/NIC) is starting to narrow in on what my problem appears to be. There is this vague recollection that I reconfigured something in the plugging arrangements in the powerstrip that supplies the PC, router, modem, etc. about the time this problem started showing up. Thanks for your observations. Regards, Dave M. "Peter R. Fletcher" pfletch(at)fletchers(hyphen)uk.com wrote in message ... Random "A network cable is unplugged" Errors
Hi Guys,
I have had the exact same problem with the "network cable unplugged" message and "Network now connected" message bouncing rapidly back and forth every ten minutes or so. Luckily, this happened since I installed an AC line stabiliser to plug the PC and peripherals into........great stabilisation, huh? I assume that there is some kind of power fluctuation going on when the stabiliser kicks in? This is not really my area. When I saw in the first post that the laptop is not affected I immediately thought that maybe it is not connected to the same power source. So how can I protect my system here in Brazil - where the power grid is extremely unstable? Or is it OK for the unplug/replug scenario to be happening? I donīt actually lose my connection when this happens......sometimes it happens in the middle of a download and I do not detect any change. Best wishes, Briggy Athlon 2600+, Asus MB, XP sp1 .. Random "A network cable is unplugged" Errors
Hello Briggy,
I tried to solve the problem by installing a battery-backup / power conditioner and it had no effect. My problem turned out to be the NIC / ethernet adaptor card. When I replaced that, the problem went away. When I got the "network cable unplugged" error my connection to the internet was indeed dropped. Sometimes it came back quick enough so that whatever was in progress continued on without ill effect. Other times the "page not found" error would appear or Outlook would complain that the server was not available. FWIW Dave M. "Briggy" wrote in message m... Hi Guys, I have had the exact same problem with the "network cable unplugged" message and "Network now connected" message bouncing rapidly back and forth every ten minutes or so. Best wishes, Briggy Athlon 2600+, Asus MB, XP sp1 .
Random "A network cable is unplugged" Errors
Hi Dave,
Well I guess at least you got the problem sorted out in the end. These things are a pain when they happen - because the first place people tend to think is that it is a software config problem - then to the hardware later ( after hours of trawling about)! Mind you , considering all of the possible ins and outs and quirks of operating systems like Windows/Mac, donīt know LInux - havenīt made the leap yet....I suppose I should not be surprised that software is the first place to look!!
