Default no display after using double monitor and changing display setting

I've recently used my laptop in combination with a beamer (dataprojector). That worked well. Later the laptop was used to play a game that apparently changes the display settings. After that I tried to change the display settings so that both laptop and
beamer would work properly. I must have done something wrong however, because now I don't have any display at all. When I reboot, I see the windows Xp logo, but after that the screen remains blank. I have no idea how I can change the settings again with
out seeing anything :-(
Does anybody know another way to solve this problem?
thanks
