Neither. Both V5.x progs have problems that are unresolved as yet.

My Zone Alarm Pro, daily prompts me to update, but,
one day it offers ver 5.0.590.015, the next day ver 5.0.590.043.
then back to 5.0.590.015. (when it decides which one is correct I
will.....?)

No, it doesnt. Some progs that act as servers certainly cannot work with it.
They do the old lockup thing that the first V5.x update caused.

for which an update is due very soon. I'm not having any problems with it

or
my printer. I suggest you download the latest version. If you have .015
update to .043.

No, dont do that. Bad idea at the moment.

Version 5.0.590.043 fixing the problem may be system specific. It did

for
you, it did not for me.

Run any progs that act as servers? I do and it wont get on with them.

Not likely to pay for it when time comes due THIS time if they haven't fixed
it soon.

Same here, licence due in 3 weeks but I'm going to stick with V4.5 and not renew.
SP2 will be out soon, I'll see what the new Windows firewall has to offer.

So ZA is responsible for my server lockup issues also?
I didn't realise it was the problem until now. I new it caused the defrag/disk scan problem.
I've gone back to V4.5 and all is well again but I'm not renewing my ZA Pro licence, I'll
look for an alternative.

Yeah, I asked their support if it were fixed when they recently came out
with an update for version 5 and they still advise, for those who have
problems, to stick with the latest version of 4 that is available.

Nope. It most certainly does NOT work as it should. Still interfering

badly
with some server progs.

Suggest you consider thoroughly before you install this. There are

many
reports about
problems. I have had 3-4 myself and have gone back to ver

4.5.594.000.

1. Doesn't remember which tab you were in when you X out of the

window.

Yes it does. They actually have preset that it goes back to the one

window,
when I reported that it wasnt working right.

2. Downloading becomes iffy! Seems to interfere with the Microsoft
download
window.

Both 5.x releases still interfere with things badly and they havent

properly
fixed it yet. Unable to use any 5.x version here and I paid for it!

That was what I was thinking, too. Not at all happy with the idea of the XP
firewall as it is right now but then I am the type who likes to read logs!

I know that quite a lot of commercial firewalls are basically not up to the
job and the idea that you can hide safely behind a router without worrying
went out with the Ark. So, going to look into finding NEW names. It still
annoys me that Atguard sold out to Symantec to become the NIS firewall. It
was such a GOOD prog before they got hold of it.

Have been using Zonealarm -- free for about 4 -5 years. I quit updating it
because there were always fixes being made. The "Free" version, as has been
said before, is adequate for most users.

"Shane" wrote in message

I thought you were technically correct given it's a common download now

and
you have to choose which to install during setup. One supposes that Free

is
now a crippled version of Pro. I may be wrong.

Shane

Sorry. I'm used to call ZA "pro". From now on I'll call it "free". In

any
case it is fairly simple and not bloated which was the point of the

thread.
It's all you need for a good firewall, maybe the best for the individual
user.

As I said like all developers ZA labs is adding stuff to the firewall
program including an anti-virus module. I don't plan on using that as it

is
not free.

Please explain the free version of Pro !

"Bullwinkel J. Moose" wrote in message

From what I understand there are several versions now of ZA. The

free
version is still small and quick and very useful. There is a suite

with
everything and a version with anti virus. I expect these are the one

with
bloat. I'm using the free version of "pro" and it works just fine.

ZA is getting too bloated for its own good. ie a firewall

shouldn't
have
anything to do with printing. Perhaps some Symantec coders have

moved
over to zonelabs

In ,
Plato |@|.| typed:

As I said in another post, I may be just a tad old-fashioned,

but I've
never liked "all-in-one" apps or hardware. By hardware I mean

combo
printer/fax/copy/etc. as when the appliance breaks, you lose

ALL the
features.

Same applies to this type of "do

everything/fix/everything/address
everything" software.

I completely agree with you when it comes to hardware. If one
component of a printer/scanner/fax combo breaks, you have to
replace the entire unit.

But I think it's an entirely different matter when it comes to
software. First of all, software doesn't "break" and need to be
replaced the way hardware does. If something in the software
fails to work properly, the manufacturer will often patch and
repair it. And if some feature doesn't work properly, that
doesn't mean that other components of the software are therefore
useless.

To me, the major disadvantage of multi-purpose software is that
the component applications are often (but not always)
light-weight and not as robust as separate alternatives. Moreover
if you buy a multi-purpose package, you lose the ability to pick
and choose features in applications you like in one vendor's
product line and others in another vendors'. For example, I
prefer Corel WordPerfect to Microsoft Word, but Excel to Quattro
Pro. Unfortunately, my preferences here make for an expensive mix
of products if I have to buy both Office suites.

Addition.

Errors can be classified is several ways such as Critical, Major or Minor.
Most utilities such as chkdsk or Norton Disk Doctor will find the Critical
and Major errors. A utilities ability to find minor errors is a function of
the program criteria and the programmer.
I would expect a program like Norton Disk Doctor to find more minor errors
than a Windows utility like chkdsk. Minor errors are those that do not
effect system performance.

Don
