DVD problem

WIN XP SP3 plus all updates.

Back in Dec 2009 I purchased a new LiteOn IHAP322-22x DVD.

I have recently been using it to boot my computer as I have been getting
intermittent BSODs so I have been using an iso boot disc when needed.

Having been able today to start the computer, without needing the boot disc,
I took the opportunity to do a backup.
After doing this I checked to see that all was safely on the disc only to
find it was blank - nothing showing. I put the disc into a laptop and all
the backup folders were there.
I have since put in other different types of discs, DVD Video, music video,
other backup discs and saved text discs and all are blank.
I have also checked in hardware manager - device working properly - no
warnings - tried to update driver[Microsoft 5.1.2535.0] but the one I have
is it - no driver to offer in roll back. Tried the troubleshooter and no
help there.

Before I get in touch with the retailer, I was wondering if the BSODs etc
could have any bearing on the DVD player? OR I have done something
stupid[likely] somewhere else.

Sounds like the DVD player has gone bad.

I tend to agree with you - but thought it worth asking first.
I wonder what the 'third' big problem will be? Monitor dying.

first. I wonder what the 'third' big problem will be? Monitor

I'd agree too, BUT ... get what you're calling a BSOD corrected first!
Uninstalling the software or hardware for that DVD might be all it takes, in
which case the drive might be OK. It's quite possible that's what's causing
the problems. Hav you checked Event Viewer for any hints to the cause of the
problem/s?

-- Uninstall the DVD drivers
-- Uninstall the hardware
-- Find reason for BSOD and correct.
-- NOW reinstall & check out the DVD drive.

NOTES:
-- Try the drive on a different USB connector.
-- When you Install the DVD drive, DISCONNECT the wires from your router to
the 'net so it can't be accessed.
-- Then turn OFF your antivirus (can be a cause for what you describe).
-- Reinstall the DVD hardware and software for the drive.
-- Test out.
-- Turn AV back on; Reconnect router/modem to internet, and test all.

I have not been able to update position as the newsgroups were deleted - but
my IP/ISP does provide the service so I have been able to get back. That is
a relief.
The current position is that I am waiting for my 'third' LiteOn DVD - it
appears that the supplier has a 'duff' lot so might get a different make -
should find out in the next 7 days. So far the supplier has provided an
excellent service - most unusual in the UK these days.
Re BSOD - not yet sorted due to no DVD player - but I have been able to
continue to start with 'chkdsk /r running each time. It does take a while -
up to an hour, but all opens OK and no sudden shut downs and the comp runs
all day.
Event Viewer is showing -
SYSTEM -
5 X Service Control Manager events - 4 x 1000 & 1 x 1026
The next entries are all further ServContMans - 7036/7035

APPLICATION -
Only a couple of entries here -
Winlog shows 24889280KB bad sectors.
Then get a Com+event system failed event 4356.

But apart from that, the computer is running as if nothing is wrong.

Update -

I fitted No4 and got the same problem as before - the box had been opened so
looks as if it might have been tested first by the supplier.
I was hoping to slave it onto another computer, but have been unable to do
so.
What I did do today, was get another DVD[not bought-borrowed] plus a new
cable, which I fitted to the desktop - tried both cables but got the same
result - all types of disc show as empty.[left click my comp - left click
DVD-RAM - left click to open CD drive D:] - it shows as having free space -
0 bytes - total size 0 bytes.
The 'write files to CD' cannot be done - must copy files to CD first.
Did the same with both cables and my new DVD - same result.
What I did find was that when I put my XP disc IN, I was able to boot from
it get into recovery console - most strange, as nothing will play on Win Med
Player.

I am not too sure what the above is telling me - but I think my only other
option left, is to go for a clean install if XP[which is something I was
intending to do in a couple of months until this DVD problem started]. I
have run out of any other possible cures.

P.S.
My BSOD appears to have been sorted - computer stops and starts OK - no
errors - yet - all is running fine.
