Default Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed

I am just amazed at the sheer numbers of posts on the internet related
to "Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be complete"
and the various MS operating systems. My particular problem is with
XPpro SP2 and I've done a ton of reading and followed many rabbit
trails in search of a solution.

When I attempt to use the plug n play wizard, it quickly drops me out
with "an error occurred during the installation of this device, the
system cannot find the specified file" [though it really would be
sweet if that file were indeed 'specified'].

When I attempt a manual printer installation, it looks good, copying
files but at the end, kicks me out with "Printer driver was not
installed. Operation could not be completed".

This has been so frustrating and I very surprised that
'SOMEONE' (perhaps MS) would have come out with a one size fits all
solution to this problem which at least would show what areas of the
registry may need to be manually edited [to clear any mess of
previous, for installation] and perhaps more importantly,
*specifically* what files are viewed, altered, need to be present, etc
- for a good installation.

I've tried it all related to drivers, windows\system32\spool\etc; so
am not looking for advice on newest drivers, etc. What I need is more
specific to what file this install is looking for. I read another
post today, suggesting another victim of this issue to try deleting
their 'printupg.pnf' from windows\inf - heck, I checked and I don't
even have that file in that folder.

But anyway, this is a printer that used to be on my system but was
accidentally deleted. It's worked fine in the past and there's
nothing wrong with the printer or my LPT1 port. Device Mgr is good
and I can print to the printer through a dos box and also connect fine
to it with my laptop but I REALLY would like to get it running on this
machine, my box - if possible.

TIA

FINALLY - VICTORY...

Okay here's what worked for me. And this is after HOURS of reading,
trying different things, etc...

My \windows\inf folder did not contain printupg.pnf OR printupg.inf

Once I located and copied those two files into my inf folder and then
uninstalled to reinstall the printer drivers as a fresh start and
following a reboot, VOILA - my printer installed like a new
installation. So many of you with this same experience may be missing
those two files and if you're experiencing the same error, it's worth
a try because it worked for me...

Many printers require installation of the driver with the printer NOT
connected. Then, the printer
is connected when asked to do so. Did you follow this procedure?
