"Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro" selected in Windows Update
Something to watch out for if you don't want to upgrade to Windows 10
just yet... My system: Windows 8.1 Pro I have not yet reserved my Windows 10 upgrade In Windows Update's "Optional" tab, there is an optional update "Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro". Unlike other optional updates, this one is automatically selected. If you only look at the "Important" tab before clicking install, you may get an update you were not expecting. -- Kind regards Ralph |

In the past I've always done a clean format and install, and one person I know told me that he didn't like the u/g from 7 to 10. Can you comment on the pros and cons of doing the u/g vs. a clean install? TIA, Mike |

Can you comment on the pros and cons of doing the u/g vs. a clean install? The upgrade is free, if you are running an "eligible" Win7 or Win8.1. Once you have upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you can then perform a clean install on the _same_ device. If you want to do a clean install of Win10 directly over Win7, then as I understand it you would need to buy a copy of Win10 with its own licence key. One other thing The upgrade will give you a Windows 10 licence which is valid only for the life of the machine upgraded. You cannot transfer the licence to another machine. What type of Windows 7 licence do you currently have? A. If you bought a retail copy of Windows and installed it on a computer which was bought elsewhere, then AIUI you can move the licence from one computer to another. If the computer dies then you can re-install on another. B. If you bought a computer with Windows pre-installed, the copy of Windows generally has an OEM licence which is only valid for the life of that machine. If the machine dies, you need to pay for Windows again. Even if your Windows 7 is 'A', your Windows 10 will be like 'B'. In that case some might consider it to be a "licence downgrade". -- Kind regards Ralph |

See Ralph Fox's reply and let me add the following: Although many people will tell you that formatting and installing cleanly is the best way to go, I disagree. Unlike with previous versions of Windows, when doing an upgrade was often a mistake, an upgrade to Windows XP or later replaces almost everything, and usually works very well. The only real exception is when you are having problems; in that situation, an upgrade often worsens problems, rather than solving them. My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much easier than a clean installation. You can always change your mind and reinstall cleanly if problems develop. However, don't assume that doing an upgrade relieves you of the need to backup your data, etc. before beginning. Before starting to upgrade, it's always prudent to recognize that things like a sudden power loss can occur in the middle of it and cause the loss of everything. For that reason you should make sure you have backups and anything else you need to reinstall if the worst happens. |

Understood but you could be interesting in multiple operating systems, gardening, car repair, and politics and a community doesn't want to see unrelated posts showing up in their newsgroup. Shotgunning across multiple newsgroups for a post that is off-topic to some is you attempting to garner a larger audience at the nuisance of the off-topic communities. Stay on-topic. What you remarked about is a Windows 8 issue so it should have been posted in the Windows 8 newsgroup. Obviously it is not an issue with Windows 10. |

This might not be a good idea because the guy must be a loner and if you keep ignoring him, he might commit serious crimes like killing somebody or raping a 13 year old boy or girl. These loners needs treatment and by engaging with them you are keeping them away from our streets. |
