"Unbranded Computer" And Software Installation
Hello,
Just bought a new Dell desktop PC running W10. My old one, also a Dell, was running W7. I have some Dell disks from the old one that Dell supplied with it as a sort of backup. I would like to use this CD which has the full Corel suite on it, presumably, which I bought extra from Dell when I purchased the old PC. They installed it on the PC, and supplied these discs as a sort of safety or backup if ever required to reinstall. The disc is labeled: "The software is already installed on your computer. Only use this CD to REINSTALL the software" When I try to install it on the new W10 PC, I get the following msg.: "This software can only be installed on a Dell unbranded computer" Any idea what they are saying ? What's an Unbranded Computer ? Any work a rounds to allow it to be installed on the new W10 PC ? Both PC's were Dell's, so was hoping to reuse the full Corel Suite that I bought and paid for previously on the new one. Thanks, Bob |

Thanks, Bob By Corel on the disk I assume you mean it also contained the Word Perfect suite. If so and you can not install it on the second computer, then it is the disk not Corel. I have had several versions of Word Perfect and been able to install it from the disk on several computers that I have upgraded. Can you see the files on your disk? If so you may copy from the disk using file explorer. Copy the appropriate directories from the disk to your hard drive. Then install Corel from the hard drive. This is what I did to put Word Perfect on my HP Stream 7 tablet. I copied the CD to a computer on the LAN and then installed it to the laptop through a shared drive. |

I would not expect Corel to be as poorly protected as this "keyed" software. http://www.commentary.com/usman/inst...m-computer.htm There are a number of softwares that check hardware before they install. I have a couple copies of Nero (Lite) products, that only work with a particular optical drive. The identity of machines could be checked with SLIC tables (up to Win7). For Win8 and Win10, machines use MSDM tables in the BIOS, to carry an actual license key. So in addition to simple minded checks like the example above, there have also been changes to what the BIOS declares on things like new Win10 machines. Maybe that's why you're receiving the message - whatever the DVD code is checking, isn't present on a Win10 era machine. Paul |

"Unbranded Computer" And Software Installation
[snip]
What's an Unbranded Computer ? I think it's one made by Dell (so really has the brand name), that they decided not to CALL a Dell (removed the brand, unbranded). Manufactures often do this when selling it for less (maybe to make it seem less desirable). [snip] -- 27 days until the winter celebration (Friday December 25, 2015 12:00:00 AM for 1 day).
