Compatibility issue

I have a fully patched Windows XP Home Edition system which will not allow
the use of an LCD monitor. Whenever the LCD monitor is hooked up the screen
flashes on and off every few seconds continuously.

The system is a Dell Dimension 1100 with up-to-date antivirus program and
the LCD is an Optiquest Q7. This LCD monitor has also been connected to a
laptop to verify it is working properly so that has been eliminated. I have
hooked up a viewsonic (cannot remember the model now) CRT monitor and do not
have any problem.

I have also tried using the Q7 drivers for Windows XP but the problem still
exists. I also noticed that the flashing occurs even before Windows loads
menaing that the flashing occurs even when I am in the BIOS setup. Does this
point to a Dell hardware problem rather than a Windows XP problem?

I would prefer to use the flat panel LCD as the working area for this
particular PC is small. I have googled this issue (flashing monitor) and have
not found a solution as yet. Does anyone have any suggestions on how this can
be addressed?

If it happens during boot, its Sounds like a monitor or graphics
card problem, not XP. There is a rare possibility that the blanking
pin in your monitor cable is open. By connecting the Q7 to another
PC, it is probably OK. CRT monitors sometimes don't use the blanking
connection so it sounds like a graphics card problem. Dell may be
able to shed some light if the computer is not to old.

What display card w/DVI are you using or is it an onboard display controller..?
Also, verify the input selector for DVI connector is selected on the flat
panel monitor.
Made sure the cabling is correct..? Not using a dongle, right..?

It's a long shot from your description but have you tried different
resolutions and refresh rates?

It could be the refresh rate that you have set for the monitor in
Control Panel - Display - Properties. Check the specification sheet
that came with the monitor and see what the refresh rate setting
should be.

I had this problem also but discovered I had a poor connection. Once the plug was screwed in more tightly, it went away.
