Default SP2 - Does it worth ?

I am still in doubt about installing or not SP2

It seems to me that the patch is more about security
Firewall -I have Norton , and it's ok .
Pop UP blocker - I use Pop Up stopper
Outlook Express -I don't use
Wireless - I don't use
Windows Media Player - The one I have is OK

As I have seen lots of postings concerning potencial conflicts ,
I'd like to know if I am missing something.

Default SP2 - Does it worth ?

SP2 is considered a "Critical Update" and updates over
5 million lines of code in Windows XP. You'll experience
stronger security and a bit more performance by installing SP2.
If you are relying on some negative information about SP2
found in newsgroups, remember that only folks with issues
tend to post and many issues are not even related to SP2.

List of fixes included in Windows XP Service Pack 2

I would suggest performing the following maintenance prior to
installing SP2:

Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP

How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP

After installing SP2, run the above maintenance utilities again, then perform a Defrag:

but is it really worth it? if a person already has all the
critical updates then why not wait and get the free cd that
will be coming out,and use it for reformat/restore
purposes,should the need arise.

Well maybe you shouldn't download it if you are happy with the way your
system is now or just scared that some thing will get messed up

List of fixes included in SP2

I am sure you can find some information here also.
www.microsoft.com

There are people experiencing problems with the download.
I would make sure your system fully cleaned of spyware & viruses.
Disable the firewall before downloading and you should be fine.

I'm sorry Carey but I have to disagree with you there; if people are having no troubles and then they download SP2 and then they have troubles I'd have to lean toward it being SP2. I fix computers in my spare time and I for one am not computer illiterate and already with just turning on the automatic updates for me; I have had problems. You can not honestly say that all these people who are having problems are just doing something wrong and it's them and not the sp2. Trust me I've dealt with pc illiterate people with my work but I don't think it's that hard for people to push "next" "yes" and etc. to download or install this sp2. I think that for the most part these people who are having troubles with sp2 are legimate problems that Microsoft needs to be aware of. I have cable internet and a very good pc and I'm a nut at keeping it cleaned up and well taken care of: And I had the windows icon sitting in my taskbar for almost 2 days saying "downloading updates 0%" and many many others across this board are having the same problems. Any troubleshooter will tell you: Look back on what you changed, installed, etc. on your computer "before" you got the error/problems. And if these people have no problems prior to downloading sp2 and now they are having problems then I'd lean toward the sp2. Maybe it's not compatiable with their pc or maybe there's software on their pc which isn't compatiable with sp2 I don't know..that's for Microsoft to figure out. I for one love Windows XP Home Edition...and right now I'm almost afraid to even try turning automatic updates again to get it. You've gotta give these people a little more credit.

Ned,

You may want to read a bit more about what's in SP2, as there are a lot of
changes in the background to make the whole system more secure. There's a
lot of documentation he

Your choice. If you're satisfied with the current setup you have and
feel you don't need the added security or other new options, then
stand pat.
