Default Windows will not boot!

When i goto boot up my computer, the loading screen for Windows XP will come
up and start to go through its normal process, however, after about 10 secs
the screen will flassh blue and the computer will start up all over again.
i've tried booting the computer in safe mode, regularly and with the last
known good settings, all to no avail. Onece the screen stayed long enough to
read and the error message said that Windows had to be shut down because of
an error, the error listed was

UNMODIFIALE_BOOT_VOLUME

Any ideas for solving this problem, I'd prefer to not reformat, but I'm
starting to think that is my only option.

Rich,
Thanks for your reply...I have a system recovery disk that came wiht the
computer, it did not come with a dedicated copy of XP. I have to go pick it
up tommorow from my other place and I'll try it out and verify that this is
the problem. Thanks for the input.
