Why can't I close windows messenger? I have just updated
my pc to XP from 98SE, and have been reloading my other
software. I had been on-line earlier this evening, but
after closing Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and all
other programs that I had running other than Norton
Antivirus and NoAds, I am not able to close Windows
Explorer. I had signed off & were trying close the
program completely. I get a message saying " There are
other applications currently using features provided by
Windows Messenger. You must close these other
applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. These
applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN
Explorer, and Internet Explorer. "

I can't figure out what could be running that is using
this program. I didn't find anything in the knowledge
base that explained this problem either. Is there
someone that has had this problem and figured out what
the fix is?

Thanks
Mark

Greetings Mark,

You mentioned you're running Norton Antivirus. Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to recent versions of Norton Antivirus, which can conflict with Messenger
and cause some of this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton
Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton
Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and
click OK.
