Just an average home user and would like Newsgroups included.
I am presently using Windows Live Mail 2012 and would like to get a
different free email program basically since this one doesn't work well with
my NordVPN.
Comcast.Net
I looked in Google but I would like some recommendations.
I already have T-bird installed for years but really haven't transferred all
my addys and stuff into it yet.
Any good sites that can walk you through transferring everything from the
Live Mail to a new mail client?
Thanks,
Buffalo

Many people who particapate in newsgroups want to use a program that
does both e-mail and newsgroups. I never understand why anyone wants
that; to me a newsgroups and e-mail are two different things, and
there's no reason to use the same program for both.

As far as I'm concerned, you should use the e-mail program that you like
the best and suits the way you work. You should do the same with
newsreader programs. If the two turn out to be the same program, fine.
If they are two different programs, that's also fine.

I use Thunderbird as my newsreader. I don't use it for e-mail even
though it can do both, and many people use and like it for both. I use
Microsoft Outlook (part of Microsoft Office) for e-mail, which I prefer
to Thunderbird for that use.

But disregard my preferences. You should use whatever *you* like best.

I use Mozilla's Thunderbird for both email and newsgroups, and find it
handles both to my expectations. The current version is much improved
over the version I first downloaded many years ago.

Thunderbird has an additional function that makes it even more valuable.
That is the Calendar Addon Lightning. Lightning can maintain a
schedule of your various activities and keep track of your commitments
as task. This addon comes as part of the basic download and is
installed with Thunderbird.

My wife and I use Lightning to keep track of our different schedules.
When she adds an event to her calendar she invites me. When accepted it
appears in my calendar. You can do the same with people using other
calendar programs like those from MS

People don't use eMail clients these days. They are getting difficult
to setup and they carry risks with people of low intelligence like you.
These days people use webmail for all their
correspondence/communication and there is no need to worry about
backups and all that time wasting tasks.

For newsgroups and problem solving tasks people use forums. You create
one account and you get responses in your inbox which you can access
using, your guessed it, webmail!!!

You should try avoiding installing and apps because that is one way to
increase risks of malwares and snooping by foreign regimes. Machine
should be as lean as possible.

There are risks involved using 3rd party Add-Ons and that is why Mozilla
is banning these Add-Ons on latest versions of Apps.

They don't mention the names of email clients in this
help article. I would guess, you'd change clients, then
see the same flaky behavior as before.

Open once, read twice. Done. I used to use a program that did email,
newsgroup and had it's own web browser--but that program has not been
"keeping up" with the technology. In newsgroup messages and email
messages, frequently a link to the web is posted, so these three are
more than casually related.

I indeed used the Thunderbird 'ImportExportTools' Add-on to Import
e-mail messages which I Export-ed from Windows Mail. (Export-ing from
Windows Live Mail is similar.)

Some additional advice for Buffalo:

Keep your WLM setup (and its email folders, etc.) and the Export-ed
e-mail, until your Thunderbird setup has all the 'old' email and all is
working well. I.e. do not throw away the old stuff before you are *sure*
the new stuff works and you haven't lost anything. (FYI, I did the
conversion nearly 5 years ago and still have a copy of the mail I
exported from Windows Mail. Disk space is cheap, your e-mail might be
more valuable.)

Exporting/Importing Contacts is less trivial, so hopefully you
don't have that many and can just copy-and-paste the text. (I Exported
in CSV (Comma Seperated Values) format, but that involves figuring out
which W[L]M field matches which TB field.)

There's some mention here of ImportExportTools and Windows Live Mail.
I'm no email wizard, and I don't know if this helps or harms the
situation.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Importing_folders

"EML files

The previous sections explained how to import mail folders stored as mbox files.

That is the default way to store mail in Thunderbird.

Tools - ImportExportTools - Import Messages and
"Import all messages from a directory" import .eml files.

That is mainly used to import messages from other email clients that don't
support mbox files such as Windows Live Mail.

Thunderbird does support configuring an account to use maildir rather
than mbox to store messages. Thunderbird's implementation of maildir stores
all of the messages as individual files using the .eml format. Each file
has a filename that is a string of digits and has no filename. Because
they don't have a .eml file extension you need to choose "All files"
in the file picker."

The thing with email tools is, they're a complete solution,
except when they aren't. Any time you see a recipe like this,
there's usually a gotcha of some sort.

I have T-bird 24.0 as my email client and use Fortι's Agent 4.0 as my
Usenet agent, both under Win-7.

Yes, I'm a bit of a Luddite but they work for me.

My T-bird will import stuff like contacts and emails by going to
"Tools" on the tool bar and selecting "Import". Unfortunately, v-24
only imports from MS's Outlook and Outlook Exress. Perhaps later
versions will import from more programs.

Agent will import stuff, too, but V-4 seems to only import messages
from files inside folders. It will also import addresses and NZB's.
Again, maybe later versions do better.

To import in Agent: "File", "Import and Export", "Import" from the
toolbar at the top of the frame. And, yes, later versions probably
have this tool under different sub-menus.

Old versions of Thunderbird:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/

Latest release: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/ or "/en-GB/ or
whatever local language you prefer.

Note: T-bird has Mac OS and *Nixxy versions as well as Win-64 and
Win-32 ones. It can also be found in various languages at
https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/ , including such
esoteric ones spoken by only a handful of people as "US English".

Fortι Agent, older versions:
http://www.forteinc.com/agent/download-all.php

Agent's latest: http://www.forteinc.com/agent/download.php

Note: all Agents seem to be 32-bit and they are *definitely* Windows
only. No *Nixxy, no Mac OS though it does run well in emulators and
bottlers such as WINE and CrossOver.

I know none of this helps but maybe someone will need it someday.

J.

Thanks,
Buffalo
