First irritiation must be that one cannot seem to drag-n-drop things
like used to be able to do, e.g. can't just drag something from the
start menu and put it on the desktop, explorer also seems to limit
what's dragable. ARGH!!!!

On the icon, click right, More, File location.
The you can copy the shortcut.

But shortcuts on the desktop is so XP.
You can remove, add and rearange te large icons in the startmenu, even
widen (dragg) te layout at the top end the rightsite.
All persenal schortcust are then avalable anytime by the start button.
Make a clean desktop and you love it.

No, I've arranged desktop as I see fit since 3.1 days

Left top side is icons for My Computer, Network, Control Panel, Explorer
and Recycle Bin. Bottom left is some common folders etc such as Temp and
My Docs. Top right is various disk drives as I have a lot of connected
externals to system and bottom right is various shortcuts and folders
containing shortcuts to common apps I use. I HATE having to use the
Start menu for anything and avoid it at all costs. I see nothing in
Win10 to want me to change that feeling about it.

I am used to having let's say Explorer displayed on the Start menu which
I can right click and drag onto the desktop and create a copy of the
shortcut on the desktop. I have already found in Win10 to accomplish the
same is not near so easy so I'm left wondering just why people at MS
seem to think it's alright to just willy nilly whenever they feel like
it make changes in the way things work, why change where to find various
dialog boxes for settings etc. and the list goes on and on. Imagine if
every new model car had brakes and steering arranged in any manner one
could dream up rather than what's become accepted control design!

If you want to put a menu item on the desktop, then right click the menu
item, on that popup is either a 'add to desktop' or a 'more' that has
then. It might be 'pin to desktop' Can't remember.

No such option. At least in Windows 1909

I'm using the Insider version, which tends to differ in some aspects,
but on reading your message I selected Excel on the Start Menu and
dragged a link to the desktop.

Sorry, only pin to start menu. I didn't have a working win 10 in front
of me. Had to find someone with it to verify. And you're right.

I was almost sure I could, but I just tried doing that to verify that I
could.

I could.

I didn't need to run Winver. I knew I was running 1909.

I pressed Send too fast. I also meant to comment that as far as I can
remember, I could also do it in all previous versions of Windows 10.

I'm on "Windows 10 Professional (x64) Version 1909 (build 18363.535)"

Works fine for me - i.e. I can Drag an Icon from the Start Menu onto the
Desktop

Likewise, left click on any program icon in the alphabet tree drag and
drop it on the desktop, You can *not* drag folders to the desktop.
