Messenger 4.7 or 5.1 Signs out and doesn't work.

Messenger appears to sign in for both users. After a few moments whether a
message is sent or not. Both computers show the other person offline, whereas
their computer shows themselves as still online. Messenger worked fine in
past years. I see many posting online with similar problems but no solutions.
There have been no HW changes here. Only MS updates & now to IE7.
