Won’t boot past Chip message.
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following issue. First off...I recently purchased a 120 GB HD and installed it (may not be a part of the problem, but should be mentioned I think). So I was recently moving files from one HD to the new 120 GB HD I bought when all of the sudden my computer shut down and started to reboot. I have a temperature gauge on the front and my computer, the computer was not running too hot (24.9 celsuis), it has been that hot before. However when it rebooted, the BIOS booted with the first line displaying the 800MHZ chip I have and then.....nothing....nothing else. My guess is that either something on the mainboard blew or my ram crapped out. MY CPU was hot to the touch, so I’m not sure. If anyone has any insight I would be more then greatful. thank you Lordfalco. -- Posted using the http://www.windowsforumz.com interface, at author's request Articles individually checked for conformance to usenet standards Topic URL: http://www.windowsforumz.com/Hardwar...ict365324.html Visit Topic URL to contact author (reg. req'd). You were, most probably, looking at the *board* temperature (though it's a little on the cool side for that). Do you have adequate cooling? Were all the fans spinning? Is your system adequately powered. This group isn't really the best place to post as it was designed to answer questions caused by hardware once the OS has loaded. As your system doesn't get that far, you would be better off posting to a dedicated hardware group (alt.comp.hardware for example, which may be carried by your ISP's news-server). -- In memory of MS MVP Alex Nichol: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

Unless you can swap parts with another computer, it is really hard to
troubleshoot a dead computer. (:{ "Lordfalco" wrote in message news:3_1177657_4575cbea14f6b86edf65de9d2b0be187@wi ndowsforumz.com... You should not be able to touch the CPU, as it should be covered by a heatsink and fan. If not, or if the fan is not spinning, that needs to be fixed before proceeding. If anyone has any insight I would be more then greatful. You have a hardware problem. You should disconnect everything from the mainboard except CPU, RAM, and video card - that means removing all PCI cards and disconnecting all drives. Once all peripherals are disconnected, the system should boot to the point where the BIOS complains it can't find an operating system (i.e. "Boot Disk Failure" or similar message). If not, you should try a known good power supply, video card, RAM, and CPU - in that order - until you isolate the problem. If the system still doesn't boot, the mainboard has failed. If the system passes the above 'barebones' test - i.e. the BIOS complains it can't find an operating system, you should re-install all peripherals one at a time, starting with the PCI cards and moving on to the drives, and check that the system still boots to the same point after each reconnection. The above procedure will determine which peripheral device is causing the problem. It is also possible your system will work normally once you have re-installed everything, in which case the original problem was caused by a poor connection. Sunny |
