Windows defender

Running Windows Defender on Acer laptop. Ever since upgrading to
Windows 7 Windows Defender fails to start up at set time and do a
scan. Can do it manually ok. It does check for windows 7 upgrades ok.
Have checked the setting in options and it says to do scan each day at
10AM. And the box is not checked to do scan when only computer is
idle. Any ideas out there?

What AV are you running? If you use MSE, I believe it shuts Defender down.
Defender becomes redundant.

The latest's version of AVG (9) also shuts down Windows Defender.

I would also recomend you to use
Microsoft Security Essentials!
It shuts down Defender, and it is not only spyware protection,
but a fully qualified functional AntiVirus software.
Easy to use and not so resource consuming as many others.

Also verify you have your windows clock set properly.
I've seen people with their AM/PM's mixed up.

I stopped using AVG, because my computer took a serious performance hit,
while running it. Tonight, I buy NOD32.

In this case, no. MS doesn't really give a rat's ass, and, unless
something's changed recently, NOD32 is the best on the market.

I've been using NOD32 for about 10 years and I've never had a virus. A
couple of the "Virus Alerts" of late have gotten past, but Spy Sweeper
caught them before they could embed themselves. (NOD32 will get them after
they embed, but I prefer stopping them with Spy Sweeper immediately, so I
continue to run both.)

Is there a proof on this?

I subscribed to NOD32 for two years and ended up bailing after I just felt
it was too much effort to maintain and also felt it was taking a toll on my
performance on a moderately powered single CPU laptop. Switched to Windows
One Care for two years and now MSE. Same as you guys...no virus have taken
hold with any of them running and I'm just very pleased with the absolute
ease of use that MSE is providing me for free. I check on it every now and
again, it's always up to date, my scans run on schedule and my computer is
in no way bogged down. It's been flawless for me.

version I was using for a couple of years (probably from 2005-2007) seemed
to always draw my attention and I wasted lots of time looking at it, playing
with it, making sure it was configured properly etc. Just decided I didn't
need to pay for the distraction.

Yes, I bought it last night. I'd been using the trial version for the last
month, and I'm very happy with it. It doesn't bug me too much, and as long
as it doesn't block my access to my own computer, I'll probably be
satisfied.
