Default Cannot report a critical error in Generic Host Process

I constantly have 'Generic Host Process Error', (it has different simptoms
from KB894391'Generic Host Process Error' problem , which I already resolved
while ago). The problem is that this time (unlike the 894391 problem) when
svchost.exe crushes it freezes up explore.exe, IE, and blocks somehow
internet connection and running of most of the programs so I cannot send
error message to Microsoft. Termination of the svchost.exe process causes
windows to shut down in 60 seconds. I have all recorded information about
this error in folders like WER3d62.dir00 and such but I cannot report them.
Anybody knows how to report these error messages to Microsoft?

One more thing: recently I reinstalled Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 beta 2 and
have mscorsvw.exe running in the background for 4 days already. ( it makes
some background compilation). Maybe this thing somehow causing svchost.exe to
fail?

Remove the .net framework 2.0 beta 2 and see if that solves the problem.

If you *must* use the .net framework 2.0 (and you'd know it if you did),
then get the latest RC for it (I'm assuming you want the x86 release of it)

..NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86) RC

I have posted a message on the subject of the Net Framework Version 2.0 that
I would very much appreciate your looking at and give me your thoughts!

Default Latest Net.Framework Update

Jim

Please do not hijack a thread someone else started on a different,
albeit similar, topic, The thread was about a critical error. Your four
questions are not. Next time please start a new thread. I have taken the
liberty to change the subject header so that all may more easily see
what you are asking about.

Q1. When, if ever, would a home owner need this program?

A1. As and when programmes requiring Net.Framework become available. For
me that was the other day so I have downloaded Net.Framework. CleanCache
(free - donation requested) from http://www.buttuglysoftware.com/.

Q2. Windows update dumped it on me - and it takes up a lot of room!

A2. Microsoft are currently pushing users to accept automatic updating
to ensure that all users, so far as is possible do install Critical
Security Updates because of the major problems currently being caused by
viruses and spyware. Microsoft do offer users options. For whatever, you
clearly did not make the choice most suited to your needs. I suggest you
select Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates and deselect "Automatic
( Recommended)" and then select "Notify me but don't automatically
download or install them". The consequence will be that whenever new
Updates become available ( usually the second Tuesday every month ) an
icon will flash in the Notification area of the Taskbar next the Time
( default location bottom right of Window. It will flash after every
boot until you say not now or go ahead now. Personally I prefer to
select Start, Help and Support, Keep your Computer up to date with
Windows Update. Also I prefer to choose Custom when offered the choice
of Express or Custom. I would recommend that you always accept Critical
Update but the others are down to you. Net.Framework updates were not
Critical Updates.

Q3. Even more disconcerting is the fact that when Version 2 installs -
it leaves all the same version 1 files behind on my computer without
removing them!!

A3. Your assertion is not true, although I was initially puzzled when I
started to investigate. You are seeing are seeing backup copies of files
which would replace the
existing system files if you chose to uninstall version 2.0.50727. This
folder named v1.1.4322 and its contents take up 39 mb.

I suspect you can see this folder but If you can't see the folder go to
Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden
files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files
" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You
should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known
file types" is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View,
Details is selected and then select View, Choose Details and check
before Name, Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

Is your windows folder on a hard drive or partition formatted as NTFS?
If yes and not compressed you can
compress them. Right click on folder and select Properties, General,
Advanced and check the box before Compress contents to save Disk Space.
On the General Tab you can see the amount gained by deducting the size
on disk from the size. Folder compression is only an option on a NTFS
formatted drive / partition. This measure will give you back 16 mb of
disk space.

If you have compressed files and they do not appear in blue characters
in Windows Explorer select Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View
tab and you will see the Advanced Settings List below Folder View. Then
scroll down the list to it's end and you will see "Show Encrypted and
Compressed NTFS Files in Color" on the line above. Check the box before
"Show Encrypted and Compressed NTFS Files in Color".

You can also increase your free space selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest restore points? Restore points can
be quite large. By the way System Restore Points are
hidden files which you will not see even after you have taken the
measures to show hidden files detailed above.

After doing the above how large is the drive / partition containing your
Windows folder and how much free space does it contain?

Whenever you have made significant changes to files stored on your hard
drive you should run Disk Defragmenter.

Q4. Could I please have some guidance from a Microsoft spokesman as to
whether
or not it is safe to remove the duplicate version 1 files? - and maybe
even a
comment about why the Version 2 install doesn't remove version 1 files!

A4. I have no connection with Microsoft. You can safely remove Net
Framework if you wish providing you do so understanding that you will no
longer be able to run other programmes which are reliant on
Net.Framework. If you choose to uninstall remove all not just the latest
version.

If you post details of the size of your hard disk and the amount of free
space after carrying out measures suggested above I may be able to put
forward further ideas on how to increase available free space.

Hope this helps.
