Default How to make the Windows Media audio to play in Windows XP SP2?

The files are WAV and AVI . The AVI file properties show that "Audio format"
is "PCM" and "Video compression" is "Cinepak Codec". The WAV file properties
show that "Audio format" is "Microsoft ADPCM". WMP playes the files with
their audio.

Part of the problem in getting this problem answered is that
the subject line would have been more easily understood had
it said something like "Audio won't play after SP2, using
encyclopedia program"
Then the body of the message could have said...
I have an encyclopedia program that uses Windows Media
Audio files. Since updating to SP2 the player built into
the encyclopedia program no longer plays the audio. The
program was written in Russia and it is named (insert name
and link). The program runs fine on machines that do not
have SP2. The files are all on the local hard drive.
What changes does SP2 make that will stop a media file from
playing and how do I correct the issue.

Dmitry is going to make an exception to the DEP security and
post back whether that fixed the problem.

Default How to make the Windows Media audio to play in Windows XP SP2?

The logs might have some error message about the blocking of
the call for the audio to play. I'm just working in the
dark trying to think of what is happening in a system that I
do not know. Your best help will come from the people who
wrote the encyclopedia program. They probably did not start
from a blank slate, they probably used some older version of
a program or at least bits of older code, updated as needed.
They will need to learn the tricks for programming for SP2.

There are hundreds of thousands of lines of code, perhaps
millions and they all have to work together. To paraphrase
an old TV ad for hair shampoo, "Only your programmer knows
for sure."

Good luck, if I think of anything else useful I'll post
back. But I think you'll have to do more research on the
problem from your end since you are the only one with access
to all the hardware and software.

Default How to make the Windows Media audio to play in Windows XP SP2?

It could well be that there is some code in the codecs used
for those files that doesn't meet the security requirements
of SP2. It could be some kind of tracking cookie.
A quick Google indicates that there could be some
copy=protection function built-into the files to keep the
files from being pirated and your new OS version is seen as
the wrong system. You might ask this to the
programmers/authors.

Default How to make the Windows Media audio to play in Windows XP SP2?

The Application, Security and System logs have not any error message about
the blocking of the call for the audio to play. The logs have not any error
message about the audio playback at all.
The people who wrote the encyclopedia program suggest to uninstall the SP2
for Windows XP. This is the only their suggestion.

| That is the folder C:\Windows\Program Files, not from
which I installed the
| program. If I double click on the file "cmge04_d.exe" the
encyclopedia runs.
| Yes, I have tried reinstalling the encyclopedia program
again with XP SP2
| running.
| The program did not stop, there is just no sound played.
| Why do you think system event logs contain when and where
the program stop
| is happening?

| That's too bad, it would have been nice if that had been
the
| only problem. It also exhausts my ideas at present. I
| think it is something along those lines.
|
| You do say you browsed to the installation folder, is
that
| the folder C:\Windows\Program Files or is that the
folder
| from which you installed the program? If you double
click
| on the file "cmge04_d.exe" what happens?
|
| You might be able to examine system event logs and find
when
| and where the program stop is happening and that might
help.
| Just as another last thought, have you tried
reinstalling
| the encyclopedia program again with XP SP2 running?

| |I browsed from the DEP window to the program folder and
| selected

is
| the only executable

| | You should set DEP to ignore the encyclopedia
program,
| that
| | should then include the playing of the files.
| |
| | I do not know exactly what program(s) are installed
as
| part
| | of the encyclopedia program to play the data files,
so I
| | can't say exactly which programs to include.
Assuming
| that
| | the encyclopedia program installs in the
| C:/Windows/Program
| | Files folder, you would browse from the DEP window
to
| the
| | program folder and select "encyclopedia.exe" and
that
| should
| | cover all those programs. If there are different
| programs
| | to run video or audio then select them both. Just
be
| aware
| | that you would be opening a possible security issue
if
| you
| | run some infected file.

Try
