"Bob I" wrote Privacy advocates have already stomped that option into oblivion. You really need to consider reality before suggesting things like that. Um, the PC World web site has a "take the XP readiness test" in their Tools. I would seem to me that MS could have a "take the XP SP2 readiness test", don't you? You really need to consider reality before stating things like that. SP2 what a bunch of @#$!!!
Hi!
First of all, i'm a hungarian 16-year-old boy, so please forgive me my spelling mistakes. Fortunately, I don't feel the same about Service Pack 2. :-) I have some problems with integrated firewall too, and my updating system always tells me to upgrade my antivirus program even if it's upgraded. (this checking program doesn't able to analize the date of updating) But fortunately, I don't find any other problem. And my antivirus program runs as usable as always. Try the new Trend Micro Internet Security (ex PC-Chillin) 2005 beta, it's working with SP2 perfectly. And 1 more thing, if your computer doesn't want to be cool or usable with SP2, then just uninstall it from "add/remove programs". I hope You will find the way to get your windows works perfectly. Dave "Steve" wrote: I had a PERFECTLY normal, secure, wonderful (hah!) running system before I installed SP2 for Windows XP, which destroyed EVERYTHING!!!! I had McAfee Security Service running, which apparently conflicted with windows security, in spite of windows trying their best to make it as generic as possible. Well, after UNINSTALLING mcafee and telling the dumb, !@#$!@ windows Firewall to shutup and let port 10277 be accessible from outside the network, it still did NOT allow 10277 (just a random port -- it has no significance by the way) to be accessed from outside the network. I then switched the firewall OFF and it STILL "silently" firewalled my computer WITHOUT my concent!!!!!THEN! on top of ALL of this, INTERNET EXPLORER started misbehaving. Every time I try browsing a site, I have to refresh bloody ten times to get it to display the page. Most of the times I get the "Page cannot be displayed - check your connection" error and God knows what else. I'm tired of this.. I've uninstalled it and I am PRAYING that my computer becomes USABLE again. DO NOT INSTALL SP2 unless you know nothing about computers and all you do on your desktop is check emails and use MICROSOFT'S MSN!!! STEVE! |

I gather you failed to read that your anti-virus should be OFF when you install SP2. You act like your experience was based on how SP2 was written, not on your sloppy installation method. -- Gregg C. The only instruction from MS is activate AU. Nothing about AVs, programs running in the background, etc. This is irresponsible. Period. Your patronizing and denigrating attitude towards non-techies is not warranted. Alias |

SP2 what a bunch of @#$!!!
Hi Joseph!
Please install SP2, because SP2 integral firewall much better, than ZoneAlarm. It's not my opinion, it's a lot of people's opinion about this Zone Alarm. Go to www.symantec.com with Internet Explorer, and click Products Home products Norton Internet Security info Security Check. And check your firewall's defence capability! Zonealarm will make a lot of hole in your computer. And check with other firewall or with SP2 integral firewall. My advice is that you should use Trend Micro Internet Security 2004 or 2005 beta. And please sorry for my english! D. "joseph" wrote: I totally agree. SP2 ruined my computer and everything it does. Thank God I was able to get system restore to work. I will keep my Zone Alarm firewall and AVG ant-virus and forget about SP2. Too risky at this point in time. I will wait until all of the bugs are fixed. |

SP2 what a bunch of @#$!!!
Your post sounds like "Everyone is crazy, I am the only sane one" type of
post. My company 350+ servers, computers, laptops, PDA's and smart phones has installed SP2, with THREE problems, I repeat THREE problems. My school with thousands of computers and hundreds of servers has installed SP2, although I do not know how many problems they had. You say you know about computers, you use McAfee, which just shows your ignorance. OF COURSE SP2's antivirus and firewall are going to conflict with McAfee becase it is designed with Norton. In any case your firewall is still being shadowed by your router, which my need to be reset. In any case I installed SP2 on all of my computers at home, as well as my friends and relatives, and everyone loves the popup blocker. So it is funny you are the first to complain, maybe reading the instructions will help next time. Duh. If you had bothered to check the McAfee site, you would have found that they
are aware of this issue, and have posted instructions for fixing it. This knowledge base article can be found at: https://knowledgemap.nai.com/phpclient/viewKDoc.aspx?externalID=KB_KB37807&sessionID=Anon ymous|1189859261&sliceID=&docID=KC.KB_KB37807&url= kb/kb_kb37807.xml&dialogID=10017476&docType=DOC_Knowl edgeBase&iterationID=1&docName=Configuring%20the%2 0McAfee%20Common%20Management%20Agent%20to%20updat e%20on%20Microsoft%20Windows%20XPSP2 Expecting any company to automatically configure their software to work with other software automatically is unrealistic, but it is generally a good idea to check with the manufacturer of the software you are having the issue with (in this case McAfee) for advise. If you had you would have found that the fix takes about 2 minutes to implement and is much simpler than what you were attempting. I'm running two Sony P4's with XP Professional on each... I do a lot of
database development with Access and Excel interfaces... and the upgrade to SP2 went off without a hitch... the two machines are networked together and I upgraded both of them at the same time... I'm also running Trendmicro Internet Security on my main machine with my internet connection... Everything is working just fine after the upgrade... Rubbish! If a user downloads an email with a virus then runs the program with the virus, then he/she bypasses the firewall. If he then connects to the Internet, his/her system will try to sned the virus to others. A firewall that scans only incoming Internet connections only does half the job. That said, if you have a personal firewall AND good virus checking the need for a two way firewall is reduced.
