Default windows loses hdd space

i have a problem with one of my hard drives. it was
getting low on space so i moved an 800mb folder onto
another disk. but windows was still only seeing 5mb free
so i moved another 350mb. still only 5mb free. i rebooted
and still the same. i can't defrag because windows is
only seeing 5mb of free space when i have in fact cleared
off over 1gb! any ideas why it isn't seeing this free
space and how i can resolve the issue?
