Default Gmail, HP insists on printing to file

Is the printer newsgroup still active. I can't seem to find its name.

My brother had trouble with his old printer. Every time He would have
to call the Geek Squad and they fixe it for no extra charge, but it was
a nuisance, for him and them.

So he bought a new printer, from the HP OfficeJet Pro 8030 All-in-One
Printer series.

It worked fine and he printed things, but yesterday he couldn't print
something and today he can't.

He's in gmail and he does Ctrl-P and he gets a box that asks how mnay
copies, shrink to fit, a couple other things, and has the name of the
printer at the top. He clicks Print (at the bottom) and instead of
printing, the Save File routine starts. The partial-screen box with the
diretories on the left, C:/documents at the top and a list of things
already in it, with a line at the bottom to name the new document which
will end in .pm .

So we saved a copy (and next time we tried to print, the just-saved copy
was in the list of files) but what he wants is to print the thing.

Nowhere on that first box is Print to File. Nor is there Properties or
anything like that. Is that typical for HP biw? Does he have to go
somewhere else to set it to print to the printer? Was he -- hard to
believe -- supposed to right click on the printer name and uncheck file?
That doesn't seem intuitive.

Plus it worked a couple days ago.

I dl'd the manual
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06291142 ** and it has only 3 uses
of the word "file", all of which are about the File Menu.

Isn't it still part of the printer software whether to print to a file
or not. Or does Gmail make it a gmail setting? Googling
gmail "print to file"
I get all permutations except the one I want. Except in a question to
Adobe, and he's not using Adboe anything.

I'm submitting this now, and if I see more to ask about, in the manual
etc. I'll post back.

Could he forward the email to another non-gmail email account and print
that?

**(It had some other weirdo number that didn't seem like a printer model
numnber but he and I are disconnected now. I can get it later.)

Settings Devices Printers & scanners [select printer]

Manage Printer properties Advanced tab

1) check and make sure the correct driver is being used
2) check on Ports tab that FILE: port is NOT selected

Dumb question: In some of the printer Select screen from some [programs,
there is an option to print to file that can be checked.

Since sometimes the options for a specific printer are carried from one
program to another; has you brother checked that option in another
program? If so try opening the other program and uncheck print to File.

In Windows 10 there is a setting "Let Windows select my default
printer". It screwed me up until I found it. From the menu type
printer, it is at the bottom on my PRo version.

I never noticed it before. I have it, "Let Windows manage my default
printer. " and it's checked. I don't remember doing that, but I only
have 2 printers and I've been happy to use one all the time since the
other decided there's a paper jam, even though there isn't.

My brother's wife called him for dinner and he hasn't called back. I'm
listening to Dragnet, Jack Benny etc. on the PC now so I'll call him
tomorrow evening and apply all 5 answers I got until I find one that
works :-)

They all look helpful.

Thanks all.

Quite right. I used Chrome as an example as that is the natural home of
Gmail:-) But all the browsers here offer a choice of
destinations/printers after Ctrl P.

Yes, I tend to keep chrome as an alternate browser, but I do use it for
e.g. Google Play Music.

1) check and make sure the correct driver is being used
2) check on Ports tab that FILE: port is NOT selected

We have a winner here!

Under Printer Properties Advanced Ports, indeed Print to File was
checked!!!!!! Who checked it? My brother doesn't go six levels deep
into Settings. He doesn't even go 2 levels deep (or 1). Nor do I
without some overriding reason.

So what do I change it to? LPT1?

How is the printer connected? USB, network, or network via samba share
(i.e. connected to another computer but shared)?

Tried that and got an error. Don't know what kind of error.

Any chance Windows changed it to Print to File because LPT1 gave an
error?

I'm trying LPT2 and 3. Didn't always get an error box but no printing
finished.

The simplest way to fix this is just delete the printer, then reinstall
it from scratch for Settings Add printer or scanner. That way if
networked or directly connected the wizard will create the correct port
for you...(avoid having to do command line net use...)

This is very cheap.Â* Tell your brother to get it before they change
their mind.

He should also consider taking out a maintenance contract so that he can
get a personal service when his printer settings is changed to print to
file again.

Â*What will people like you do without the Geek Squad?Â* they are the
best people on this earth.

Why did you snipped all the relevant info that users can decide for
themselves whether it was useful for them.Â* Just because you didn't like
it because of your low intelligence, it doesn't mean that the OP or
other users here are like you.Â* The OP got a very good deal and he
should grab it before the service provider changes his mind. The IT is a
cut throat business these days and good deals are very hard to come by
because of Chinese embargo on exporting of IT products and services to
United States of America.
