Right click on it and select "properties" at the bottom.

And, yes, Windows Explorer is a stinker. I will they would
improve it. I have trouble telling what is open and what isn't.

Amen. What fool decoded that light/airy/monotone was better than "visible".

Linux file manager does, but I suspect what it displays is not what you
are looking for. A folder is a file and it's size is usually just the
default size unless the directory contains many files. It sounds like you
are looking for the space taken up by that directory's files, in which
case look at properties.

Removed for resource reasons beginning with Vista.
- disappearing initially during the Vista beta as classified as design
intent for the above reasons
- i.e. memory wise - the ability has been missing for about 11 yrs.

That being said, if one configures File Explorer to 'Display file size
information in folder tips' and 'Show pop-up description for folder and
desktop items' then placing the cursor on the folder, waiting for the popup,
will show the folder size for some folders but not others. i.e. it's not
perfect but apparently the most Windows, itself, will provide.

Then just how does one do this?

Linux has a plethora of file managers. My favorite is Krusader.
Not very pretty, but extremely useful. Second favorite is Thunar.
It can do remote file transfers over ssh/sftp.

Windows has others too, but I stick with WE as that is what
my customer expect to see and I don't want to confuse them.

Try https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/ Tree Size Free.
Does an excellent job of allowing you to browse folders, and it sorts by
size as a default.

Install and just right click a folder and if it was integrated into
explorer with a shell extension, you'll see "open with treesizefree" as
an option. This feature may be default or set by user in the program
IIRC.

I've had treesizefree for some time. I also have SequoiaView. What I miss
is something like foldersize that works in explorer rather than needing a
stand-alone app.

But seriously. Any intelligent adult knows exactly what I am
talking about.

It sounds like you are looking for the space taken up by
that directory's files, in which case look at properties.

Having to look at properties for every folder is a very
inefficient way of doing things.

Huh? I am looking at the status bar, it says...

"11 items, 1 item selected"

And, yes, Windows Explorer is a stinker. I will they would
improve it. I have trouble telling what is open and what
isn't.

Right... The item selected on the left side does not indicate
what is in focus on the right side.

Amen. What fool decoded that light/airy/monotone was
better than "visible".

And... Focus is sometimes lost after deleting items.

Someone at Microsoft just decided that file manager, a very
important part of Windows since its beginning, needed to be
messed up even more. Probably part of the effort to turn the
desktop into a smartphone.
