Default Common Places

In Xp there was a way to add 5 locations that were called common places.
These were places that you went to all of the time and they would appear in
all drop down menus when trying to open a file from any program. Is this
possible with Vista?

Might be - try posting in a VISTA group, rather than an XP one....
