Hi All,

Many thanks,

Why not just use 3rd party software to create a bootable USB from the ISO.
e.g. Windows USB/DVD Download Tool, Rufus, ABUSB, ESET SysRescue Live,
WinToFlash, Windows USB Installer Maker.

MSFT provides an easy route via the MSFT Media Creation Tool to create a
bootable USB or DVD. Download the tool, run it, and choose the USB option.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
- Fyi...Use an 8 GB or 16GB USB drive
- The USB will contain both Home and Pro installation files

Hi Winston,

I had been googling it and get back a tool from M$
that would download the iso and burn it to usb for
you. And, I already had the iso.

I will try rufus again under W7, but I have not had a lot
of luck with rufus on a virtual machine.

But on the bright side, you gave me a nice list
of other ones to try.

Thank you!

p.s. It would be nice if the chuckle heads at M$ would
set up their ISOs so you can use dd. But ...

Followup:

I wound up using something called "Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool.exe".
Didn't even bitch about having a USB drive mounted th rough a virtual
machine.

And it booted too, but stopped at the four pane blue w-10 logo
on my virtual machine. Rats. I will have to try booting natively

Can you just redownload the ISO but this time tell the media creation
tool to just put it on a USB.

Yes I know, it's another download, but it's oh so simple.

Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool.exe

That's the tool I use here, for ISO to USB.
Works on at least W7/W8.1/W10.

*******

Note that it has one dependency. It *extracts*
bootsect.exe from the ISO you give it.

Now, consider the following possibility. Your technician
machine runs a 32-bit OS. The ISO you're working
on with the tool is a 64-bit OS. The program grabs
bootsect off the 64-bit ISO, tries to execute it
on the 32-bit OS, and it fails.

To stop that from happening, stage a 32-bit bootsect.exe
in the installation folder (which happens to be in a
weird place). The program will find that bootsect.exe
and use it in preference to extracting one from the ISO
file itself. That allows my 32-bit technician machine, to
handle both 32-bit and 64-bit ISO files.
