"Stage 1 infects devices running Busybox- and Linux-based
firmware"

Here's that superior linux operating system again.

Busybox is a toy. It isn't a mainstream Linux product.

Android is Linux based, but probably the least secure system out
there, almost as bad as Windows! 'Droid phones, followed by Droid
tablets, followed by Windows tablets.

Don't expect security on something that is "Easy to use!" Easy for
the most daft limited windows user...

The devil is in the details. Security is hard and as you say it is
the enemy of ease-of-use for nontechnical end-users.

Most embedded devices like home routers are running stripped-down code
on top of an old kernel. Most likely all processes are running as root.
Security is poor to begin and even if security updates are made available
most users will never install them.

Under those kind of conditions it really doesn't matter what the
underlying OS is, you're just begging to be cracked.
