Default Windows 10 doesn't need antivirus software!? Really!?

A guy we know updated his computer to Windows 10 and found that his
antivirus software (don't know which) no longer worked. He mentioned it
to the guy he knows that is the IT guru at a local college. IT guy says,
"With Windows 10 you don't need antivirus software"!!

That's Window$ Defender. It's installed by default.

There are many free anti-virus scanners:

1. Micro$oft Security Eseential
2. Avira Antivir Personal
3. AVG Free
4. Avast Home
5. BitDefender Free

Please report that "IT Guru" to his superiors. It is blatantly wrong
and either the "guy you know" is an idiot for not understanding the IT
speak or that College IT Guru got the job by false pretence. Either way
this needs to be investigated at the highest level.

Windows Defender started as just an anti-spyware scanner, so limited
value. In Win8, it turned into an anti-virus program. Better but
coverage detection and heuristics are much low than other free choices.

Apparently the "guy we know" was to lazy to troubleshoot why his
unidentified choice of AV software "no longer worked". Yeah, lots of
details there, uh huh, but then the intent of the post was not to
address the original problem that spurred questioning the so-called guru
who recommended MS Defender. Yeah, a boob quantifying someone else as a
guru, uh huh. Gee, I'm an ASE certified auto mechanic just because I
have a battery hygrometer to someone else who doesn't.

The gist was Win10 doesn't need [3rd party] AV software but omitted to
mention that claim was due to the inclusion of MS Defender. Well, if
that is the level of protection you want then use it. I prefer a better
quality webby condom.

Find out which anti-virus it is, and find out exactly what "no longer
worked" means.

Like many people who call themselves "gurus," he doesn't know what
he's talking about. Unless of course, he means you don't need
*third-party* anti-virus software.

Note that that is spelled "Microsoft Security Essentials." And since
Windows 8, it is called Windows Defender,

I can't be sure that this is always the case, but I can tell you that
for a friend of mine, running Avast under Windows 10, there were
disastrous problems that wouldn't go away until I uninstalled for her.

Thank you! I was just reporting what I heard of.

Called Windows Defender in Windows XP. Just an anti-spyware scanner.
Called Windows Defender in Vista & 7.
Called Windows Defender in Windows 8. Upgraded to anti-virus scanner.
Called Windows Defender in Windows 10.

Microsoft Security Essentials started back in Windows XP. Replaced
Windows Live OneCare. The latest MSE 4.5 ran on XP, Vista, and 7 but
not on Win8 because that already included an AV (Windows Defender became
an AV). Win8 install requires removal of MSE when upgrading from Win7.

Yep, you are correct, MSE became Defender since Win8 so there is no
point in installing MSE on Win8, and later. Just look at the
screenshots for Win8 Defender and MSE 4.8: they're the same. The prior
Defender was discontinued and the new Defender showed up. Microsoft
giggles so hard that they pee when deliberately confusing the users with
product names. The king is dead, long live the king.

Let's assume that he did mean that *third-party* anti-virus software is
not needed. But is that true? Is the current Windows Defender as good
as, or better than, the best third-party anti-virus software (whatever
that may be)?

No, it is not. You can easily search for antivirus reviews and ratings.
Windows Defender consistently comes out near the bottom of the pack.

Better than nothing, I suppose, but not something that you should rely
on.

"How can I fix Avast Antivirus if it stops working after a Windows 10
upgrade?

"Only Avast Antivirus 2015 R2 and R3 are compatible with Windows 10. You
may need to reinstall the Avast software to restore your protection.
Please see Installing Avast Antivirus 2015 on Windows 10 for detailed steps.

"Users with Premium Avast Antivirus products may need to insert the
license again after re-installing the software."

I would not use Defender on my laptop or desktop. However since I use
my tablet as a briefcase, and it is only occasionally turned on I do use
Defender on it.

The Win7 to Win10 Upgrade process, has no intention
of precisely preserving user programs. Any program
with low level hooks (a DLL that gives direct access
to hardware), those things can be removed. I would
be shocked, if any modern AV program, could survive
such an attack.

Older OS installation procedures, use Upgrade Advisor,
and give a list of programs not considered to be
compatible. That would give a user a chance to say,
remove their AV program, use the special AV cleanup EXE
from the AV supplier site. That's the polite way to
do an upgrade. Then after the Upgrade is completed,
a fresh copy of the AV can be installed by the user.
