Opera consisted of two development streams.

Up to release 12.15 or so, it was Presto???

Later versions were based on Chromium (Google) as an engine.

"Version 50 of Google’s browser recently
rolled out without support for Windows XP"

https://www.opera.com/docs/history/

Opera 37
Release date 2016-05-04
Rendering engine Chromium 50
JavaScript engine V8

Opera 36
Release date 2016-03-15
Rendering engine Chromium 49 --- WinXP OK ???
JavaScript engine V8

Your version should be safe then. V28 would be
Chromium based, but before Google removed WinXP support.

Perhaps the problem is related to your choice of SP2 ?

*******

These might be for SP3.

http://www.oldapps.com/google_chrome...tem=Windows_XP

Google Chrome 36.0.1941.0 (Dev)
16 April, 2014

Google Chrome 35.0.1916.47 (Beta)
16 April, 2014

Google Chrome 34.0.1847.116
08 April, 2014

There is at least one registry modification you can
do, to change the (claimed) release of your OS to SP3.
But that's only going to work, if that's the kind of
error you're getting. If the installer is actually
relying on an SP3 feature, like a kernel call or something,
that won't work.

Could you post error detail, just for fun ?

The sample of Opera I downloaded, the files are
just in a kind of archive, so at first glance the
installation doesn't look that scary. It's probably not
an msiexec error or a Windows Installer version error.
The file set does give the impression that the
browser is "interested" in your graphics subsystem.
Version of DirectX perhaps.

Hi Paul,

I am sorry I did not write down the error message. After that, I deleted
Opera 28. Note: This PC has a FAT32 HD with dual boot.

I recall when I tried to install Chrome for WinXP, several months ago,
with a FAT32 HD (because HD was dual boot with Win98 on C: and WinXP on D,
I got an error message that did not make me aware the root cause was FAT32.
Another PC, same WinXP version, but NTFS HD, I had no errors when I
installed the same version of Chrome.

The sample of Opera I downloaded, the files are
just in a kind of archive, so at first glance the
installation doesn't look that scary. It's probably not
an msiexec error or a Windows Installer version error.

Hi,

I had no problems installing Opera 36 on one of my PCs with NTFS HD (same
Windows XP version as other FAT32 HD PC).

Thanks again, John
