Default password For Microsoft Account not working

Hi all,

I just switched over from Windows XP to Windows 8 and for some reason
the password that I used for Microsoft Account is not working. And it
got to the point where I could not try any further.

The password entered WHERE? In a web browser? If so, what PAGE?

As I recall, if you perform too many failed logins, they figure you're
trying to break into the account. They lock the account for 24 hours,
so now you'll have to wait.

Presumably you were using their web interface to log into your account
versus some client (e.g., e-mail). Sometimes logins fail to Live,
Hotmail, or Outlook.com because Microsoft shoves in an interstitial
security page with a CAPTCHA that a human has to enter its text. They
want to make sure a human is using that account, not a bot. If suddenly
logins from your [e-mail] client starts failing, use their webmail
interface to see if you get the CAPTCHA security page. Once you
successfully enter the text to verify you're a human, logins start
working again from your clients.

If the login fails using their webmail interface then it isn't what you
remember, it's been changed, like a hacker got in because you used a
weak password, or your account was idle too long and your account has
been deleted (you never mentioned when was the last time login was
successful). Use the "Forgot password" scheme afforded by their site.

If you know what is your password and it isn't working anymore, and if
the "Forgot password" scheme works to get you in, remember that all
those security questions for the "Forgot Password" were available to a
hacker (so they can use the same "Forgot Password" scheme to get back
in), you'll want to change all your personal data so the hacker won't
have that to get back in. As I recall, you cannot change your
birthdate.

Consider it a test of the hotmail spam filters

Works very well if you set your Hotmail account to exclusive mode.
Then you have opt-in only mode where only your whitelisted senders
can get their e-mails into your Inbox. Of course, it is still inconsiderate
to energize the spam in the first place at your e-mail provider. They
still have to waste resources handling that crap that you directed at
them.

Exclusive filter (in Hotmail/Outlook.com) allows email from:
- all contacts in the online address book (the People UI)
- all safe senders (added via the web UI or WLM when signed on to Live services in WLM)
- all Outlook.com service announcements
- all alerts previously configured
