Default USB Drive sharing properties lost

Hello all,

I would like to know if it is normal for an USB drive to lose its sharing
properties when the USB drive is connected to a running PC (this means that
the USB drive does not boot with the PC). However when the USB drive is
connected and boots with the PC to which it is attached all the sharing
properties are kept. I have a LaCie USB drive which according to the
manufacturer is up to date (firmware, drivers..).

I normally power on my USB drive after the powering on my PC so all the
sharing properties are gone. With my old USB drive (IOMagic brand) I didn't
have such a problem. The USB drive could be power on before or after the PC
has boot and all the sharing properties were kept.

I have assign different letters to my USB drive through the disk management,
I have formatted the drive, I have modify the drive through the device
manager so it is optimize for performance but the problem persists. This also
occurs on Windows Vista...

Is this a normal behavior, can I modify some settings so that my USB drive
keeps its sharing properties no matter when it is powered on?

Thanks for your help.

Pablo

The lost of "sharing" properties "is normal" because XP does not
"like" to share USB drives. When you connect/power the USB drive
adter XP is started, the "Plug and play(aka pray)" will "re-assign"
the USB device id to it. XP will then "treat" it as a new USB device
(even-though it is "old" to XP.) However, when XP starts up with the
USB drive connected/powered on, XP will see it as an "old" known
device and give it back its settings.
