Default OT MS Word problem

I'm posting here because I couldn't find a non-specialized Word newsgroup
and I use XP Home.

Lately my Word 2002 has had a strange problem. Doesn't always occur.
Instead of the document formatted as I saved it when I open some documents
later it is a sort of raw document. All the text is in unformatted lines on
the page and includes a long list of formating instructions at the end of
the document. I can find no menu option to correct this problem.

I suppose I should find a fresh version of Word compatible with XP and my
old Work documents. And likely have to pay fot it. Or maybe I could get a
fresh copy of the original off the XP install CD?

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

I think most versions of Word are compatible with XP, at least the ones
that came out before it. (I've not heard of Word 2002, though. Do you
mean 2003?)

Unlikely; XP didn't include Word, only WordPad (unless you have some OEM
version where the manufacturer _did_ include Word, though I don't know
of any such. I think Windows 7 comes with some sort of "starter" version
of Word/Office, though I'm not sure about that).

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

Have you the possibility of trying to load one of your odd-looking files
onto a different computer (that has Word)?

You'll need to have this fish in your ear. (First series, fit the first.)

I don't think Word came with XP, so you must have gotten Word somewhere
else. One option might be to install a free Word compatible program like
Kingsoft Office or Softmaker Free Office.

Try in this newsgroup: microsoft.public.word.docmanagement. They
have several knowledgeable Word experts there.

Good luck,
George

Nope. Says 2002 in menu Help window.
