I waited 10 minutes.
My mobo:
MSI FM2-A85XA-G43
MS-7793 (v2.x)

If you didn't unplug the power cord from the machine, the capacitors
might not bleed down at all.

Never-the-less, here is the manual for your board, download, extract
and open it:

http://us.msi.com/support/mb/FM2A85X...ml#down-manual

Section 2 refers to the bios, page 2-7 shows you where to find the
audio controller setting and page 2-9 shows you where to find the
Restore default bios setting, it is in the exit menu.

I could not find the mechanical method of resetting clearing the CMOS
bios, I am sure there must be a way, I just couldn't find it.

Go ahead and restore the default settings, remember, change the date
and time in the OS back to the correct settings and do it immediately
after rebooting.

Sorry for the pause - I had to deal with other personals.
First, thanks for the manual URL. Turns out my paper manual that came
with the mobo is nowhere the same. I used yours naturally - found
what I could not before.

When I pulled the CMOS battery, I also pulled the power cord knowing
it continues to supply mobo power even tho the mobo is shut down.

When I replaced the battery, I restored the Bios default settings -
re-booted. Sorry to say things look about the same. Under Control
Panel Sounds I see:
1 - Digital Display Audio
AMD High Definition Audio Device
Not plugged in
Red

Speakers
Realtek High Definition Audio
Not plugged in
Red

Realtek Digital Output
Realtek High Definition Audio
Disabled
Black

The Desktop Tray Icon for the speaker is RED.
The Sound Scheme for all events are GRAY.

That's all I can think to tell you at this point.

1. What about the device that showed no drivers installed?

2. Did you press the CMOS reset button on the mainboard?

3. Did you attempt to boot from the Linux live cd?

4. When you pulled the battery, did the date change?

5. Have you updated the bios to the newest version, on the MSI website
it appears to be dated February 2015

Again - sorry for delayed response. I have beaucoup responsibilities
I will not go into that take much of my time and influence my
thinkings. I should just give all this up and wait for my Chinese
sound board and hope that works.

That said, I got out my Linux stuff in closet, and wouldn't you know I
cud not find a live CD. I really thought I had made and used one. I'm
talking at least three years ago. Anyway I did find several Ubuntu
versions of which I tried a v11.04 disk. It seemed to install ok, but
when I ran the result in its so-called test mode so as to not disturb
my W7, it would not play any audio. I tried a few MP3's and OGG's. I
don't remember what Linux files are audio.

I thought to install XP on another loose HDD I have to try its audio,
but quickly re-discovered that this MOBO is not really geared up for
XP without a lot of workaround. So I gave that up.

No, the date did not change when I pulled the CMOS battery. That is
strange, but is an indicator that the CMOS was not really reset, huh?

I dunno what BIOS version I have - have to take a look, I do know I
subscribe to riverAgent, and I downloaded and installed what they said
should be ungraded.

No, I did not press the CMOS reset button - gotta find it. I told you
how I handled the reset.

I don't remember what device showed no driver installed. My bad. Have
to revue prior posts when I get the time.

Thanks for your support. I'll remember you in my will.

Go through today's posts, I gave you the page number in the manual
that shows a diagram of where the reset button is located. I thought
it was a jumper and Paul discovered it was a button.

Way back when this all started I posted these diagnostic steps and my
impression you had a hardware related issue. Reset the CMOS using the
button and see if that makes a difference.

The manual I got, had both a button and a two pin header.
I expect they are just in parallel. You would use the
header, if you're one of those "let's drain it for a
while" people. While the button is for people with
short term resetting on their minds. In both cases, the
computer must be unplugged.

If you drain it enough to stop the RTC, it should
start at the beginning of the defined epoch. At one
time, people would see 1970 as the year. But modern
designs keep pushing the default year forward.
Now, it wouldn't be that many years from 2015.
You could still tell it was reset though, it
should stand out if that has happened.

Since the OPs sound worked at one time, I don't
see a good reason to bump the BIOS revision. If
there was bitrot, the main BIOS code block is protected
by a checksum. The OP hasn't completed enough
test cases yet, to be getting desperate.

While the sound chip might have died, you can
usually spot a trend like that by looking at the
Newegg reviews for the board. If the same chip
fails on all boards, the reviewers pick up on
it pretty quickly. Misery loves company.

Looks like the latest version is 2.6. Personally, after resetting the
CMOS bios with the main board button, I would install the latest bios.
Here is the link:

http://us.msi.com/support/mb/FM2A85XAG43.html#down-bios

This is what it says:

FM2-A85XA-G65 (MS-7793) V2.6 BIOS Release
-------------------------------------------------

1. This is AMI BIOS release

2. This BIOS fixes the following problem of the previous version:
- Update BIOS module.
- Optimised OC Genie setting.

3. 2015/02/13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note:
* Please download and execute the file in USB pen drive only.
System will restart several times to update system BIOS with NVRAM &
ROMHOLE.
Please DO NOT remove the USB pen drive until BIOS updated
successfully.
* Please make sure you have read the SOP before you update the BIOS.
* Please use Trinity CPU to update BIOS before changing to Richland
CPU.
* There is no way to reflash back to BIOS version 1xx if you already
updated to version 2xx.

I fear flashing any BIOS.

One more follow-up. When you were tinkering around inside the
computer, replacing the DVD, or after that, did you disconnect any
cables from the main board or external headers? If so, based on the
manual I sent you this morning, are you absolutely positive your
cables have been reconnected correctly? No missed or bent pins, etc?

As you may have guessed, early AM is my main free time - so here I be.
Then complications set in. That said -
No. The only cables I disconnected were to the reeplaced DVD and a
1TB Sata backup HDD. I have examined all cabling since my problem -
all seem okay.

I am going to flash the BIOS. God help me.

Ohboy

Found a few minutes to squeeze a quick look. Lo, the mobo manual
cited in an earlier post is NOT for my mobo. It appears that there
are several versions of this mobo. Somewhat of a confusing mess in my
opinion. Anyway, this is what I have for resetting the CMOS I think:

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/736...page=35#manual

I'm gonna jump it when I get another minute.

JW

Stole another minute.

I did the following:
1) Shut down
2) Pull AC power
3) Pulled Cmos battery
4) Jump'ed the CMOS reset
5) Left it sit for 15 min
6) Un-jump'ed the Cmos reset
7) Re-inserted the Cmos battery
8) Reconnected AC power
9) Booted - went into Bios - set the date. All else looked same.
10) Looked at sound settings - All look same - Tray sound icon still
checked red
11) No sound of course

Oh well - can't wait to try the forthcoming Chinese sound board I
bought (said two weeks to get it).

Thanks for helps.
Will try anything you guys come with. You're my only hope.

With great fear of sounding like a one string banjo, have you
downloaded the latest Linux LiveCD and booted from that (do not
install it)? I sent you a link yesterday.

No - I cud not find my LiveCD, but I had a few Ubunu install CDs
around - tried one - I cud not determine if I had sound or not. I
think I forgot how to work with that OS. Too bad because in years
past I programmed C on Unix main frames. Oh well.

I'll go look for your link. I missed it I guess.

I looked at all your posts that I have anyway - I do not see a link
to a LiveCD site. Cud U post it again?

Before I post the links, will you be burning this to a DVD or to a
flash memory stick?

I planned a CD disk or DVD disk in my working burner drive, but Ihave
room on a stick.

I started reading on LIVECD, and you know I think allmy so called
Ubuntu version disks I found are really LiveCDs? Or at least they
appear to show similar windows as they come up. I that case, I used a
Ubuntu, but cud not figger out how to do any audio on it.
