I was having problems with the hard disc running almost all
the time, and as is it turns out by simply setting the display
under right-click on Computer Advanced System Settings
Performance Settings Adjust For Best Performance, and
that did the trick completely.

I also tried the "ReadyBoost" feature on my old 1 GB flash
drive, and that also has put a little less load on my 2 GB hard
disc which by now is only flashing its light a little bit,
nothing at all like it was before. My whole computer is running
like five times faster than it was before, like it was brand new.

P.S. Oops!! I was so happy that my PC's hard disc light wasn't
running almost all the time after disabling the "Aero" theme
and so forth, that I wrote "2 GB hard disc" when I should've
written 2 GB RAM and 500 GB hard disc. It's a 4 1/2 year old
COMPAQ that's been a real work horse with the Win 7 x64 Home
Premium, and MSE, with everything kept up-to-date. I'm pretty
sure that the problem started after I downloaded and installed
a large high-def optional update to the NVDIA display driver,
and that gradually taxed the swap file more and more as months
went on. Why I don't know because there's still plenty of
available disc space (324 GB free), but it's working fine now.
The default out-of-the-box Aero theme used to work fine. It
was the big update that caused the problem. I did notice this
morning that icons has replaced thumbnails in the file folders,
so I re-enabled only that checkbox.

I found a helpful web page "22 Easy and Free Steps to Make
Windows 7 Faster & Faster":
