There are indeed stories about bad display card settings damaging CRT
monitors in the past.


Windows 9x had the same settings in the registry somewhere, useful if
you wanted more pixels, or less flicker, on your CRT.

According to some (probably wrong) pack-rat stuff I surprisingly still
have (i.e. a handwritten note in the jewel case of 'Privateer'),
HKEY_CONFIG\DISPLAY\RESOLUTION

But that very well may've been shorthand so it'd fit on the notecard.
