Default MS Precision Wheel problem

I see a couple things we can try to get you going.

First lets make sure you are using the correct driver. We can use the steps
in this KB article for that.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;299039

Next, if that doesn't fix it we should update the USB drivers for your VIA
USB controller. There have been issues in the past with some VIA USB
chipsets, and it looks like you are running the drivers that came with
Windows XP. If you can't find updated drivers from your manufacturer you can
try the ones at www.viaarena.com . I have heard of people using those
successfully in the past.

Default MS Precision Wheel problem

I changed the USB driver, without any effect... is there a possibility
to switch to combined axes 'by hand' in some .ini's or is there an
wholly other driver used in the combined mode?

I will try to check with filemon from sysinternals.com which files are
affected when clicking 'Properties' - perhaps something is missing...

The last resort is of course reinstalling XP, but I my system is so well

Yes,

Sidewinder 4.0 software works beautifully in my XP Pro system, with a MS
Sidewinder FF wheel and pedals - usb.

Sidewinder 3.02 (or earlier) is NOT supported in Windows XP.

Note that Sidewinder 4.0 was designed for the USB gaming devices that
it came with and not older Sidewinder devices.

I don't believe the SideWinder software is supported in Windows XP.
Uninstall the software and add the device using the Game Controllers
in the Control Panel. Just select SideWinder (Auto-Detect) and XP
should automatically install it for you. This means you won't have
all of the features of the SideWinder software, but unfortunatley,
the software does not support XP.

I would suggest either trying to uninstall and reinstall the

the file and reinstalling.

May be best to uninstall, reboot....confirm joy.cpl is no longer
on the system, then try to reinstall.

Steve

Thanks for a good tip. Unfortunately it doesnt work :-(

I deleted joy.cpl (not that easy, because XP tries to restore it
'on the fly'...) and after that 'Game Controllers' dissapeared, so
I copied another joy.cpl instead (from another machine), but the
error message is still there... hmm I run out of ideas... there
must be a solution to it....

I'm having a different problem. I have the 4.0 disc Microsoft sent me but
when I try and instal I get this error:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The System file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications.

I've tried all the Setup programs on the disc and get the same error. I
have a Sidewinder Wheel NON Force Feedback with USB connect.

Your autoexec.nt file probably became corrupt due to spyware.

I've attached a clean copy for you here.

Place it in the \Windows\System32 directory.
