Default win xp boot.ini

I have XP Pro on c:\ and Win 98 on d:\ but there is an error in my boot.ini
file which is preventing me from accessing win 98

This is the boot.ini file

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)d:\WINDOWS="Mic rosoft Windows 98"
/fastdetect

Obviously the error is in the last line, but please can somebody put me
right?

Thanks a lot

Stu

Hi Stu,

What happens when you try to access Win98?
Was this a drive you just added and want a dual boot?

See this link from MVP Doug Knox, it may help:

Default win xp boot.ini

Use the below:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /SOS
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

Note, this will only work if Windows 98 was actually "installed" on D:, with
the original 9x boot code on C:, and not moved to D: because you moved your
hard drive.

See my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to Win XP Tips

For Win9x/Me: Install 98/Me after XP is Installed.
For Windows 2000: Install Windows 2000 after XP is installed.

Otherwise, you'll need a 3 rd party boot manager, like BootIt Next
Generation, www.bootitng.com.

The last line shouldn't have the "d:" there, Rick.
It sounds like a single drive, partitioned C & D, & should only point to the
partition no. (2), not the drive letter.

Default win xp boot.ini

It works on mine, the only difference is I boot to the primary (active)
partitions of two separate drives which are both partitioned -
1. Cactive) + D: and
2. Eactive) + F:

Here's the last two lines of my working boot.ini

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows 98"

It would help, Doug, if you said why it wouldn't work.

I'm more concerned as to how it was installed. As Doug mentioned, it (Win98)
needs to be installed as D in order for it to work. If this was an added
hard drive, then the rdisk value may need to change as well. So little
information and so many possibilities.
