System slows and freezes
Over the last several weeks my system has been getting intermittently slower
and recently has several times completely frozen up, to where the mouse cursor responds to mouse movement but nothing else happens. I have run CA AntiVirus, and AdAware scan, no problems found. Also ran MemTest86+, again no errors. What should I do next? |

one of the easiest
methods to begin analyzing an issue with performance is to compare the performance with that of windows safe mode: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222 -- db·´¯`·...¸)))º DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces "nirvana is shared and not hoarded" - dbZen "Renny Bosch" wrote in message ... Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? Is the computer left on 24/7? I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more informative. Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48 hours ago. System slows and freezes
Hi Gerry,
Commit Charge: Total = 475068 Limit = 1255656 Peak = 575832 Computer is not left on overnight. Before I do the defrag stuff, let me tell you another thing. When I ran the system in Safe mode, I couldn't get the display to anything other than 480x640, so I tried VGA Mode (thinking that would still be a safe mode). That allowed me to get into 1280x1024, but it screwed up all the icons on my desktop. So then I attempted a System Restore, but after trying it told me it can not be restored to the point I had chosen. I tried two other points and same thing. So we have a new symptom: Cannot Restore. The event viewer shows a long chain of Error entries like this: " Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7023 Date: 1/22/2009 Time: 3:21:09 PM User: N/A Computer: YOUR-F78BF48CE2 Description: The Application Management service terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. " I tried that link but it didn't tell me how to find out which module was not found. I want to get this posted before the system crashes again. Thanks for your help. "Gerry" wrote in message ... Renny Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Another update:
I attempted a System Restore from Safe Mode, and it worked! So that particular problem may have gone away. Also I should mention that I had run msconfig and unchecked the following Startup programs (I wouldn't think this could cause a problem): Reader_sl (part of Adobe Reader) BkupTray (part of NTI BackupNow) qttask (QuickTime) SOUNDMAN.EXE "Renny Bosch" wrote in message ... Following the link for Event 4614, the page said:
1.. Click Start, and then click Run. 2.. Type comexp.msc . . . When I did this I got "Windows cannot find comexp.msc." So I searched for it and found it in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Com\comexp.msc, which I ran. The web page then said: 1.. To locate your application, click Component Services, click Computers, click My Computer, and then click COM+ Applications. 2.. Right-click the component name, and then click Properties. 3.. In the component properties dialog box, click each tab to verify that the required properties Unfortunately all the options on all the tabs on all the components were grayed out. But also, I don't know what the "required properties" are, anyway. The web page also told me to: 1.. Scroll through the list of service names to find the following services: COM+ Event System, COM+ System Application, DCOM Server Process Launcher, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). 2.. Confirm that the status of each service is Started. I did this and they were all "Started". My system has CA AntiVirus, with automatic updates. I did a full scan a few days ago and found no viruses. I also have Ad-Aware 2008 Free which I updated and ran and found nothing except some cookies. I will check the computer for dust; it does run the fan on high-speed quite often. Then I'll do the HD Tune. Thanks again for your long-distance assistance. Renny "Gerry" wrote in message ... Renny If you are using Home Edition you can safely ignore Event ID: 7023.
