Default Overlaying a still image on a video clip in WMM? Possible?

Am using Windows Movie Maker 2.1 on XP. I have a video clip with
audio, and wish to overlay a static image on top of it without
interrupting the audio. The video is someone performing a song, and
the still shot would be like a cutaway reaction shot that would appear
for a couple of seconds during the vid during the song.

Is there a way to do this (in Windows Movie Maker only please)? I
know you can overly titles, but images, such as jpgs? Does WMM let
you do this? Looked all over the web, and am having a hard time
finding the answer to this.

Thanks

yes, check my website's Edit Movies XML Script Types Custom Overlays
page

you do it with a custom title animation that uses a still image instead of
text

How do I change the duration of the still clip?

I have inserted the "papajohn Overlay 1" as a title animation, but it
just shows up for a couple seconds and then disappears.

Thanks for the help on this

Zoom alll the way into the timeline.... pg up and pg down keys are one
way... when you can see it enough to work with it, grab the right trim
handle and pull it to the right to make the duration as long as you want.

Default Overlaying a still image on a video clip in WMM? Possible?

Thanks PapaJohn,

That worked great.

Now I am stumped again.

I would like this static image to cover just a part of the movie frame
and not the whole thing (I am just trying to cover up an unsightly part
of a movie with a still image - it would be in the same position the
entire movie).

I am using WMM 2.1 on an XP machine.

I would like the static image to cover a center top portion of the
movie (about 1/3 of the center width of the movie and about 1/3 of the
center top - if that makes sense). Not sure if it will translate, but
kind of like where the "X" box is in the frame below

____________
|.....| x |.....|
|.....|___|.....|
|.................|
|___________|

I have tried to look at Newsletter #83 which is supposed to talk about
image overlay position, but I can't really see where it is addressed
here (a bit of a newbie, so I might just be missing it).

I have also tried to click on the "Download the Moving Overlay Guide
for MM2.1 or MM2.6 and unzip the contents" link on the Custom Overlay
guide on your website, hoping there might me more instruction there, but
that link seems to be dead.

thanks if you are able to help

Open my static image (one of my starter kit .png files) using something like
Paint.net that handles transparancy in a .png file....use the eraser or
other tools to take away the part of the image you don't want save it
right over the existing .png file and it'll do what you want.

As you want a fixed overlay image, no reason to get into the complexities of
a moving one.

Thanks for the reply,

I see, so you make the image so that the part you want to show up
somewhere is placed in that section of a full sized image where the rest
of the image is just transparent.

This did work absolutely fine and I now have the image covering the bad
part of the video with the rest of the movie showing.

One last HiJack of this thread since in searching for the answer to
this audio problem your name comes up often as well :-).

The audio for the movie sounds perfect in WMM as I have the project set
up. Just as the original video file sounds (its a .wmv file to start
out with taken from a webcam).

Then when I save the movie file (or "finish it), the audio sounds tinny
and a bit crackly (not horrific, but this is a video of a piano piece,
so the sound quality is rather important).

Interestingly the file size of the new .wmv file that I have made with
the static image incorporated into it is now smaller that the origial
video. It goes from 47,000 KB for a 2-minute clip to 32,000 KB after
editing it in WMM with the static image.

And again, when I listen/watch the video _while_it_is_in_WMM__it sounds
fine - just like the original, its only when I save it as a movie that
it loses audio quality.

I have it saved as "best quality" (2.1 mps

Any thoughts Papajohn? You have been extremely helpful and I really
appreciate it. I am sooooooo close to getting what I wanted!

Audio issues like that can be perplexing. When I run into things like that
when heading to an online video host, I let them go and the playback of the
flash file from the service is good. One thought is to let it go to the next
step, if there is a next step.

Another thing to try is save the movie to a DV-AVI file and see how it
sounds in it. If OK, import it as a single clip and save it again to the wmv
file of your choice.

You can also play the file where it sounds good and capture it as a
narration file in Movie Maker as it plays... it'll be a wma file. Then use
that as the audio. See my website's Import Movie Source Files Music and
Audio page if you need more info about doing it.

Good luck with it.
