Default Movie maker and burn to DVD

I need help. This may be very basic. I know someone out there can assist me.
I am a beginner. I have finished a video and it is ready to be burned. I go
to file and choose the option of saving the movie to a recordable CD. When I
do this it appears to be working. After about 20 minutes the disc gets
ejected and an unknown error occurred. I have tried to burn with Nero. When
nero accesses my "all files" the icon is that of windows media player. Those
seem to burn ok and are playeable on a regular DVD player. However, some of
the other projects have a movie reel icon. These are the ones that nero can
not access. It appears an issue of formatting and I do not know how to get
aroundit. Can a movie project be in movie maker and in windows media player?
Can one go from one to the other? It seems to me that the project in windows
movie maker are compressed files and once they are decompressed and some how
placed or copied to windows media player they can be burned. I am looking for
the missing steps. Someone help this poor beginner. Thank you.

Default Movie maker and burn to DVD

After you've finished your project you need to save it to your computer in
DV-AVI format.

Once you've saved the file, you then need to open your third party DVD
burning software (Nero) import the DV-AVI file and tell Nero to burn a VIDEO
DVD ... (not a DATA DVD).

From the menu on the left hand side, click on Save to My Computer.... on the
following page, click on Other Options..... use the drop down to select
DV-AVI.

How do you import the file to your third party software.... exactly the same
as you would open (import) any other file, open Nero Express, tell it you
want to make a VIDEO DVD and it will ask the location of the file(s) you
wish to include in the project. Point it at the DV-AVI file you just saved
on your hard drive.

I'm also a beginner and had a similar problem, though Cari's answers made my
day. I have MyDVD, and its editing is very primitive compared to that of WMM.
Thanks to Cari, now I know how to use them both. I have one more question,
though. WMM's default "save as" option is windows media (WMV), with a note
saying it is "the best quality to play in my equipment" (free translation
from spanish). But Cari's recommendation is to save the film as a DV-AVI
file. Why is that? What's the difference?

DV-AVI is the least compressed, therefore if you're going to create a DVD
and you want it to look its best, it will lose the least amount of
resolution when you use DV-AVI.

If you use a low resolution WMV to save the file and then create a DVD from
that WMV file, it's going to look pretty horrible when you proudly play your
newly created DVD on your neighbor's new 65" HDTV even though it might look
OK on your 17" monitor.

If you cast your mind back to the days of VHS....when you copied a tape to
another tape, each time it lost a bit of quality and by the time one tape
had done the rounds of your friends and neighbors, the 10th generation was
almost unwatchable. Each time you edit, you lose a little quality, and by
the tenth edit.... well, it's that kind of thing, but using DV-AVI will keep
it as best as it can possibly be.
