Default Best Browser for WinXP

Hi,

I have been using FireFox 52 (newest version for XP), but at times I can
not log in at a web site unless I use a newer version. I have to use
a Linux laptop with a newer FF. Note: I do not like Linux as much as
WinXP.

Is there another browser such as Sea Monkey that would be more
compatible with these web sites?

Thank You in advance, John

Oh dear!. Why did you get this message? Are you sure you are using the correct Newsgroup compliant newsreader? Try reinstalling Mozilla Thunderbird to see if it makes any difference. The post contains a very important topic that you may not want to miss.

I've been using New Moon lately. The versions keep
up with FF versions, but are compatible with XP and
low on funny business. My only complaint is that the
last version I tried broke at least one of my extensions,
so I went back to 28.6, about a year old.

Also note that it's worth experimenting with changing
your userAgent. But Mozilla got sneaky about that. There
are now 2 settings:

If this setting does not exist you need to create it
as a boolean value:

general.useragent.enable_overrides True

This setting is a string value:

setting: general.useragent.override

value: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/78.0

Watch for wordwrap there. That will tell them
you're on Win7 with a recent version of FF.
The reason that's so important is because many sites
simply refuse to support XP and many sites check for
older browsers. I've run across it numerous times. A site
works perfectly fine if I spoof but not otherwise.

There's been an epidemic of kiddie coders jazzing up
websites to an extreme degree, using gobs of scripting,
and generally not knowing what they're doing. Some very
impressive and responive sites can come out of that but
they're extremely complicated. Essentially software
programs that you download. In some cases it might be
true that your browser won't handle them. But in most
cases it's just that people are rigging their sites to only
work with the most recent technology. They can't be
bothered with anything else. As a realtor once said to
me when I suggested he might want to rethink using
Flash: "My clients will be using the best technology."

The design of HTML was intended to support "degrading
gracefully", which means that if a browser doesn't recognize
new elements it will still do its best to render a page. And
the job of the webmaster is to support that by trying to
write pages that support as many browsers as possible. Those
days are gone. The whole commercial Web is now acting like
the bratty teenager who puts a notice on his webpage to
explain how it's best viewed. For example, I've been blocking
NOSCRIPT tags for years, with script usually disabled.
The purpose of those tags is to provide
alternate content for people without script enabled. But
no one does that anymore. They only use NOSCRIPT to
specify spyware beacon images. I've seen it numerous times:
A page is completely broken without script. It may even be
plain white. But the code includes NOSCRIPT tags to ensure
that Facebook and Google can still track your visit. It's not
about usable webpages. It's about how to get something
from you when you visit. If not money then at least tracking data.

Sometimes changing the user agent ID can help. Google for a string from
more recent version of Firefox and try it.

The MyPal browser (branching from PaleMoon) customises Firefox to work on XP
but I'm not sure what version it uses. It could be something like FFX v60.
