Guess M$ dropped this newsgroup from their server?

I get the following message:

"The newsgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics does not appear to
exist on the host msnews.microsoft.com. Would you like to unsubscribe
from it?"

My ISP still offers this newsgroup but how many people will take the
time to configure their newsreader to continue to use this newsgroup?

I'm not a big forum fan. Oh well. 8-)

A large number of users already use other NNTP servers for 2 reasons:
Microsoft's NNTP server includes filtering that can block a good post
for no good reason, and there are more newsgroups in Usenet than just
the microsoft.public.* newsgroups (Microsoft's NNTP server only carries
a subset of the available newsgroups).

ISPs are dropping NNTP service because it garners them no revenue. It
looks like your ISP (grandecom) is contracting with Giganews to provide
NNTP service. What are you going to do when your ISP drops Giganews?
Start checking out the alternative and free NNTP providers, like
Albasani or Eternal-September, or the extremely cheap individual.net.

Microsoft decide to experiment 4 years ago in trying to usurp the
30-year old Usenet. Microsoft is leaving. Usenet still survives.
These newsgroups will survive despite Microsoft's leaving.

Microsoft.public.security.virus pretty much died when M$ dropped it from
their server. Very few new posts there. I figure this newsgroup will do
the same thing.

Not the regulars like you (and me, to some extent), etc., but the
general public didn't seem to show up from other news servers. I guess
the general public went to forums?

These free NNTP providers you mention, http://albasani.net/
http://www.eternal-september.org/ and/or http://individual.net/ , are
they going to let me post anonymously? Without a valid e-mail address
for people to snare and SPAM to?

This is all new to me. I've always had an ISP that provided me with
access to newsgroups but as you point out, what would I do if my current
ISP drops this service? I didn't think about it until you replied.

These newsgroups will revert to the Usenet crowd rather than getting
redirected here by links at Microsoft and in their product (that point
at the Communities which gateway to Usenet). A newsgroup isn't dead
because of lack of volume for posts. It is dead when you get no
responses.

Both Albasani and Eternal-September require you to register to get an
account. You need an account to login. You need to give them a valid
e-mail address to which they can send you the registration data;
however, you can use a disposable account or e-mail alias to get the
registration data. You don't need it to login (you use your username
and password). These NSPs require you to register but they don't
identify you by your e-mail address.

Just look at my post. Does the value for the e-mail address in the From
header actually look like a valid e-mail address? You can use any bogus
or munged e-mail address you want in the account you configure in your
newsreader. You need to register to login. Your login doesn't include
your e-mail address. Your posts through them don't have the e-mail
address (disposable or alias) that you used to get the registration
data. There are free NNTP servers that don't require you to register
but then not requiring a login is what promotes the trolls to use those
servers.

Thanks. You're using albasani.net, correct? I'll try to set that up as a
backup for my ISP news server. Once I do that, I should be able to find
an XP newsgroup just in case I have any XP questions.
