Default WinXP works

Hi,

I'm hear to tell you that WinXP and Opera work while Win10 and Chrome or
Microsoft Edge do not work. Sometimes it is easier to try alternatives
rather than to understand why things don't work. I was trying to engage the
web software of the local civil resolution tribunal. I have a lawsuit
against Mr. Lube who foolishly ignored my Faxes. They put the wrong gear oil
in my transmission. The CRT web software works on WinXP but not Win10 and it
is too complicated to explain or understand. Maybe CRT still uses WinXP like
the banks?

There will always be some fools that think "new and improved" is
actually new or improved.

Ivory Soap would be a good example. It has been new and improved many
times since 1800, yet still bears the advertising that it is “99.44
percent pure” since around 1850. Now are they really tweaking the
last 0.66% to improve it?

M$ is in the business of selling (often untested) operating systems
and tweaking the look and "feel" (often making it harder to use) just
so folks think it is new improved and you need to get it.

I was down at city hall and they still use computers running DOS
programs for record keeping because it is reliable and trouble free.

Wise decision. No need to replace something that works and is not broken.

Despite being an old OS, the fact that it's still being used means that it
at least has some advantages over modern OSes.

Ditto. I kept using my Windows XP Pro. SP3 until October 2016 when its
old HDD died suddenly with its clicks of death. And then, I decided to
use my never used retail 64-bit W7 HPE SP1 since it was time since I
kept delaying it. Heh, now its MS support ends in January 2020 but I'll
keep using it until I can't on this decade old PC! I hope my future PC
hardwares can still use it. It will probably be a few years before
softwares and non-MS support won't work like XP. I really hate W10.

There's are bad sides: Lack of security and fixes with older softwares.

Lack of fixes for old softwares can't be helped, but old softwares are
usually stable enough. They aren't made like nowaday softwares - which are
premature and rushed.

As for secirity... No worry. Using password protected disk compression such
as Stacker, is similar to using disk encryption. So, data is safe.

And regarding malwares... who still wrote DOS viruses anyway? Even if there
is, it would be only a very few of them. DOS is no longer "tasty" from the
hackers' point of view. For them, DOS is trash. So, even if there's an open
door intentionally left open. There's a very high chance that no hacker
would be insterrested.

Like DOS, OS/2 is a peaceful OS now. Virtually no one is still trying to
exploit them.

That being said, it doesn't mean that we should not protect the system.
Especially if it's accessible to the public.

I remember Stacker software (didn't buy its hardware) on my IBM PS/2 model 30 286 10 Mhz PC's 30 MB HDD. I
think I only got 20 MB more. Haha.

Oops. I thought we're talking about Windows XP from this newsgroup. I saw you mentioned DOS. Yeah, DOS is
fine. I still remember my dentist still using DOS years ago until they got Windows 7! :/
