Default Saving Disk Space

I'm a very new computer user & I kinda experiment around, clicking
buttons & stuff. A lot of times I run into the option of "compress
drives to save disk space". Should I always check this option? What
are the pros & cons of doing so?

Thanks!

Do not use "Compress Drives to Save Disk Space". If you do,
you'll find that your computer will take a performance hit.

It's really debatable. If you have a bunch of plain data files you keep
around but hardly ever use, then the overhead in access time isn't much of a
hindrance.

Have a look at this disk usage analysis tool. It is for analyzing occupied disk space.
