I.E. Toolbars turned black !!!
My Outlook Express Toolbars turned black ... the background and the
associated lettering. A few icons are showing. It happened after I was prompted by Adobe to update the Flash Player.. Seems this happened once before, but I forgot what the fix was ... TIA, Hagen Sahm |

That is like fixing something that isn't broken, isn't it? Anyway the latest version of flash probably doesn't play nice with a driver like your video driver or something. You have a number of choices now. 1) Use System Restore to get back the older flash and dump the newer. If Windows Update didn't already toast SR already. 2) Remove flash from Add/Remove and find an older version of flash. www.oldversion.com, www.oldapps.com, etc. are good for this and then install it. 3) Update your video driver and cross your fingers the problem disappears. 4) Restore from a backup. We all do this right? I am sure there are other things to do. But those are the most basic ones. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Thunderbird v3.0 Centrino Core2 Duo 2GHz - 1.5GB - Windows 7 |

Jon You can plug all security holes (known and unknown as of yet) with a real time AV and a sandbox environment. Lots of choices for sandboxes; sandboxie, Maxthon (a browser), and Avast (an AV with a built in sandbox) just to name a few. And they come in free versions too. When I bought my first Asus EeePC 701 back about 4 years ago with only a 4GB SSD soldered on the motherboard and XP SP2 installed. There just wasn't any room for updates. And Microsoft sold them licenses anyway. I have been using Windows since '93 and I never had a virus yet. So I figured without updates, I would be soon getting them. I was already, made frequent backups and everything. After a year of using three of these things without any malware, I started wondering how important is security updates anyway? I researched on the net and found other people who don't update and who don't get viruses either. Since I have a dozen or so computers here, I decided to test this some more. So half I would update and half I would not. Still no viruses on any of them and that was three years ago. And the only thing different between the updated ones and the ones not is the updated ones ends up with problems simular to what Hägar gets. My updated XP computers now crash System Restore if you try to run them. Although my non-updated ones still work perfectly fine. So I don't think much of security updates anymore. And only important if one actually fixes a problem you are having (super rare). Or if you don't know enough to protect your system and can use all of the help you can get. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Thunderbird v3.0 Centrino Core2 Duo 2GHz - 1.5GB - Windows 7 |

You are right, of course ... but if you get the same upgrade message every time you open up IE8, at what point does one cave in and click "OK" .... Anyway, the problem is resolved. Thanks. |

Although a lot of them can be turned off. Usually buried deep somewhere. Some of those cannot, not even with a registry modification. :-( -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Thunderbird v3.0 Centrino Core2 Duo 2GHz - 1.5GB - Windows 7 |

Jon Or, if it's a flash update, it's because you're accessing websites that say you need a new version of flash. (Even if you don't, they refuse to proceed until you do.) Yes, you can avoid such sites, but that's just limiting your web experience for no good reason - it's certainly not going to stop Adobe and the web designers doing what they do, just because you and one or two others avoid them. -- J. An aside to the usual suspects, I'd like to add that some personal Toolbars, when installing, have a selected option to black out all other toolbars. I have no idea why they came up with this idea, but I went through it back when I used IE. -- -There are some who call me... Jim "Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. Odd? I'm not sure if I ever saw that and I use over a dozen computers here. And half of them I don't even bother with any updates. Yes the machines with IE6 still on them, some websites will look awful. And if you think that is bad, try using Firefox 2 on many websites and they are even far worse. I can't recall which version of flash I can still run and it still work for the majority of the time. I believe it was v8 that still works pretty well. You can find older versions of flash at places like this: Old Version of Adobe Flash Player Download - OldApps.com http://www.oldapps.com/flash_player.php -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Thunderbird v3.0 Centrino Core2 Duo 2GHz - 1.5GB - Windows 7 |
