Default Saving LONG Filenames

In the process of rebuilding my data on a new HDD, I want to setup a
similar folder setup like I had on my old drive, which failed.
I have a copy of the old drive, which I saved using a bootable linux
stick.

What I want to do is save the entire file tree as a text file.

I went to that backup and then to the Dos prompt (cmmmand line), and
typed TREE filetree.txt

I was able to save the entire file tree, as text, but all the long
filenames of the folders were truncated as FOLDER~1.
Is there any way to save the LONG folder names?

I'm doing this on Win98, but I would think XP would work the same in
this manner.

I can't promise anything, but you can test pdTree from FreeDOS instead.
I had to use archive.org, because the ibiblio site is so slow.

https://web.archive.org/web/20171115...ml/pdtree.html

The download is 136KB. The download isn't on the archive.org page (grrr),
so I was forced to switch back to this and wait a minute or two for
the download box to appear. I'm on ADSL and I have to
be very very very patient...

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-...til/pdtree.zip

Inside the ZIP, the binary is only 39,936 bytes.

The manual page for pdTree is here. It has a /S option
to switch it on purpose to short file names. And that
part worked. My test environment isn't returning
short filenames right now, unless I use that option.

http://help.fdos.org/en/hhstndrd/util/pdtree.htm

Programs like this use standard APIs for crawling
a file tree, so my expectation is that this will screw up
just like tree does. It's an OS side problem, not
a utility problem. And someone might have to write
their own directory traversal code to step
around the problem, for all I know.

The OP is (most likely) running plain DOS, not a console window runing under
Windows

Although the OP thinks it works the same inder XP, I'm not aware that it can
be booted into DOS (as you can with W98)

i was running it in a DOS WINDOW in Win98. I could also boot directly to
DOS, But it's using the DOS that comes with Win98.

Actually, it's been many years, but I dont think the TREE command came
with Win98. I think it was eliminated in 98. But I sort of recall
copying that and a few other missing Dos commands from a prior version
of Dos to the Dos folder in Win98. The commands work fine, it's just
that Win98 did not come with them. It's been 18 or 19 years since I
installed Win98, so it's hard to remember all the details, but it seems
to me that TREE was not included.

I'm doing it from a dos window in Win98se. If XP could recognize this
defective drive, I'd plug the drive into a USB port on an XP computer
(using an adaptor). But XP only says to format the drive. I can only
read the drive in Win98 and a Linux boot. I'm not a linux user, I can
only boot it and use it to copy or delete files, little more. So I am
using the Dos from Win98, which is "native dos" (I guess).

One comment I have to make, is that MS puts so much bloat and crap in
Windos, yet it has never had adaquate utilities to do something as
simple as making a readable text file of the files/folders on the HDD.

I did think of installing one of those old alternative desktop programs
that were common for Windows 9x, and trying that, but by the time I
download them and test them, I may as well just go to the old pencil and
paper method and write the folders on paper. Sometimes low tech is the
quickets and easiest method.

I should also mention that the folder tree I created using Win98, made a
text file which looks great using DOS EDIT. It shows all the lines that
are the levels and such. However, opening it in Windows Notepad, or
Wordpad turns all the lines into upper characters, and that makes it
pretty hard to read, if not impossible to use.

Sample below:

³ ÃÄÄÄWORLD'~1
³ ÃÄÄÄHAMRAD~1
³ ÃÄÄÄTRANSM~1
³ ³ ÃÄÄÄTHEAA8~1
³ ³ ÀÄÄÄBROADC~1
³ ÃÄÄÄANTIQU~1
³ ³ ÃÄÄÄANTIQU~1
³ ³ ³ ÃÄÄÄANTIQU~1
³ ³ ³ ÃÄÄÄANTIQU~2
³ ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄANTIQU~3
³ ³ ÀÄÄÄBATTER~1
³ ³ ÃÄÄÄPOWERI~1
³ ³ ÀÄÄÄ_B_BAT~1
³ ÃÄÄÄSELENI~1
³ ÃÄÄÄCFLBUL~1
³ ÃÄÄÄALTECL~1
³ ³ ÃÄÄÄ9444AP~1
³ ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄZIPMAN~1
³ ³ ÀÄÄÄ1692AM~1
³ ³ ÃÄÄÄMINE-E~1
³ ³ ÃÄÄÄOTHER

Thats not Notepads or Wordpads doing, thats just the default character used
by Windows. I think you can change it to use the DOS style characterset,
but that would be system-wide (in other words: don't do it).

What you can do however is to, in Wordpad, select one such character, press
ctrl-H (replace a string), and enter, in the textbox below it, the
replacement char you want instead.

For instance, change that "Ã" to "+", the "Ä" to "-". the "³" to "|", and
the "À" to "\". I think thats about all.

Yes, I was going to suggest DIR as well. But I think he wants only the
tree, not the files. (Or do you have 20k-odd directories?)

I have a free program that I downloaded, and it runs in Win98 and XP.
It's called "Karen's Directory Printer". It does a pretty good job of
turning filenames into a text file. But it makes a long file that needs
a lot of scrolling to read. I just wanted the FOLDER TREE, so I can
create all the folders that I need.

This program allows more or less detail. I can accept or decline things
like file date, dile size, etc, but it wont just create a folder only
tree txt file.

John, OP,

Yes, I was going to suggest DIR as well. But I think he wants
only the tree, not the files.

You mean like you get with "DIR /ad /s /b" ?

If it would be me I would suggest the OP to use exactly that, instead of
that graphical tree representation.

Being able to just copy-and-paste a certain line from such a file into the
filebrowser to get at a certain directory (read: not having to traverse the
graphical tree while doing the same in the filebrowser, which is prone to
mistakes) is a big pre for me.

Excellent! Thanks for that.

And people with this sort of mindset (which includes me) would probably
also like RED (remove empty directories) from
http://www.jonasjohn.de/red.htm - like registry cleaners, there are
potential problems, and no actual advantages, but those of us who like
to be able to see the wood for the trees find it appealing.
(Unfortunately it says XP on only, but it might still be useful to the
OP when he has the drive on his XP machine.)

Good point.

Rudy Wieser

No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

Karen's Directory Printer is free, and it solved all these problems.
It's a GUI, and it runs in Win98 or XP. Nice piece of software and
eliminates all ths dos crap.
