I've only encountered it once, a school had tried to use an old clunker
laptop as a web/email client for the caretaker ... it still felt like an
old clunker.

You do NOT need to hate the hardware when you only hate software. Win 10
is a piece of software in case you didn't know.

True, and the reason why I get tried of hearing that someone bought a
"Windows 10 computer". You can always replace it with a good OS.

The PC I'm writing this on came with Win 8. It hasn't had Win 8 on it in
a long time.

Depending on how locked-down the platform is,
you may need help.

Not every computing platform is completely open, and
you'll have to take your can-opener to some of them.

This is why, in the modern age, you should think carefully
about that "cheap" piece of junk you bought on Black Friday,
as it may not be "open enough" to re-purpose.

We're lucky to have enjoyed a short era in time, with
relatively open standards. It won't stay that way for long.
Plenty of things have been done to platforms, in the name
of some wonky definition of "security".

But presumably it was still the fastest modern OS running at such a
laptop...

You could call them kernels.
