Default Finally, Version 1709 Installed on 32GB SSD Laptop

I had previously written here about being stuck on Windows 10 Version 1511.

3

Microsoft kept throwing Version 1703 at the machine, but always failing due
to not enough disk space, saying it needed 8GB to update, and to attach
either an external HD or a flash drive. I tried both, but neither worked.
At one time, I was able to clear 9GB on the SSD, but still no luck.

Today, I was able to install Windows 10 Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.15),
over the existing Version 1511, saving all apps and settings.

I first tried copying the Medial Creation Tool on to a flash drive, but when
I clicked it off, it told me 'incompatible version'. Huh?

But now I had filled the disk with 6GB more and I had to delete this.
Storage showed 6GB in Temporary Files, and deleting Temporary Files did
nothing. The traditional methods wouldn't delete a single Kb. Crap. I
pulled the ethernet connection, and shut down wifi, and used method 3 and 5,
here, which gave me 10GB mo

http://troubleshooter.xyz/wiki/fix-u...rary-files-in-
windows-10/#Method_3_Manually_Delete_Temporary_Files

From the Microsoft update catalog, I downloaded 2017-11 Cumulative Update for
Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4048955), on to a flash
drive. I clicked this off, and selected to save apps and settings. Fingers
crossed, all went well. Self-rebooted a few times, and at one time threw up a
message:

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some
error info, and then we'll restart for you.
55% complete
Stop code: DRIVER POWER START FAILURE"

The laptop restarted, apparently fixing the issue, and finished installing
Version 1709. Then, the system went out and grabbed more updates. Fingers
still crossed. It all took about an hour or so, but the screen came up
saying "Hi", and then something like "Wait while your PC is set up..."
Finally, my lock screen appeared, just as before, and then my Account log in,
and I was in with my familiar desktop and Taskbar.

I do have some questions. Here's a visual aid:

https://postimg.org/gallery/2sb3mt1d8/

Referring to Version 1709
how is Disk 0 partition numbering determined?

Referring to Temporary Files and WindowsOld
WindowsOld shows that folder is 12GB, while Temporary Files shows Previous
version of Windows to be 8.61GB. Why?

By the way, a Notification popped up saying:

"Delete previous version of Windows?
Your computer's running low on storage space.
We can free some up by deleting your previous version of Windows. Warning:
you won't be able to get back to it."

When I click the 'Delete' button, nothing happens, other than the
notification disappearing. If I then reboot, disk capacity hasn't changed,
and in the Storage...Temporary Files window, there's still 8.61GB of Previous
version of Windows. I will later check this box and see if it has any
effect. If not, I will just delete the Windows.old folder.

Ok. This is interesting.

Clicking Disk Cleanup, before clicking Clean up system files, shows Total
amount of disk space you gain: 6.05MB, consisting of:

Downloaded Program Files 0 bytes (checked)
Temporary Internet Files 24.6KB (checked)
Devilery Optimization Files 128KB (unchecked)
Thumbnails 6.02MB (checked)
There are other unchecked files, but all are 0KB
Not much to gain from above..

After checking Clean up system files, Total amount of disk space you gain
shows 40.3MB, still not much to gain here.

But, scrolling down the entire list Previous Windows Installation(s) shows
17.7GB unchecked. The description does say it is the Windows.old folder,
and I do notice that a Properties done on the WindowsOld folder does show
a similar Size of 16.7GB (even though StorageTemporary FilesPrevious
versioin of Windows shows 8.61GB...these inconsistencies drive me nuts)

So, I'll check the Previous Windows Installation(s) and let things fly and
see how much space is gained.

After doing this, both Storage and Disk Management show only 12.1GB free.
Hmmm...I was supposed to gain 17.7GB. I'm happy to get this space back,
but again, this stuff drives me nuts.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know but could the files in the Windows.old be compressed?

There may be a problem of failed updates in the
\windows\Softwaredistribution folder. I have had to delete literally
thousands of files from previous failed installations.

It is best to make sure there are no pending updates, and do it off line.

Ah, could be.

There may be a problem of failed updates in the
\windows\Softwaredistribution folder. I have had to delete literally
thousands of files from previous failed installations.

Yes, I remember you writing about this. I have purposely stayed offline
since downloading the Version 1709 Cumulative Update from the update
catalog. I do have a SoftwareDistribution folder showing 8.41MB,
containing 8 folders and 8 files, so basically, it's empty.

It is best to make sure there are no pending updates, and do it off
line.

I haven't given Windows Update a chance to look for updates, because I'm
still offline. SettingsUpdate and Security shows No updates are
available. We'll continue to check daily for newer updates. And, clickin
on View installed update history shows absolutely nothing, although
Control PanelProgramsUninstall a Program shows Update for Windows 10 for
x64-based Systems (KB4023057), 11/16/2017 (I did this Version 1709 update
on 11/19/2017), and if I go to Control PanelProgramsView installed
updates, it shows No updates installed on this computer. I guess 'update'
is defined differently in each window. Go figure.

This laptop is one that I use to figure out and explore Windows 10 before
I apply changes to my other Windows 10 machines. I still have one more
Windows 10 Dell desktop, still in the box, that I will soon activate.
It'll probably load with Version 1703, as did the last Dell desktop that I
activated a month ago.

Windows 10 is 'ok'. It's pretty, but even once I come up the learning
curve, I see that there are so many ways to get to where you want to go
within the OS (many more than previous editions), and depending on where
you land, the system reports differently. It seems like one has to check
all landing spots to be sure of what's going on.

Well, I've beat this to death, and have come to the conclusion that I'll
just have to roll with the punches with Windows 10. It is what it is. g

Thanks for replying and reading this far.

Right-click the Start Orb and enter "winver" in the Run box.

That will tell you which version of OS you're running at
present, and whether the version of OS you expect is
there or not. For example, after using a DVD to install
the OS, you might be at 16299.15, and after adding the
November (patch Tuesday) security update, you could
be at 16299.64.

It's interesting that your Disk 0 is missing a partition.

Is this part of how tablets mount a WIM or something ?

That's not something that happens on a desktop with
a regular disk instead of soldered-down eMMC flash.

I would need to get out the forensic tools, to figure
out the monkey business involved there :-) I'd start
with "disktype" for example, just to parse the partition
table and sniff for partitions.

Windows 10 doesn't have a permissions repair script.
There have been other OSes, where a permissions script
was possible, for resetting permissions in a semi-intelligent
manner, and that can help a lot when something has
happened to the SIDs. Maybe that's why you can't delete
stuff. You *can* use the Properties box and Security
tab to fix stuff, but that's a pretty slow way to solve
global problems.

Given how your system isn't 100%, I'd be checking
the Event Viewer. The traditional name for the executable
for that is "eventvwr.msc" and it's a control panel.
It would normally be underneath Administrator tools.
You can execute that from the Run box, as a shortcut,
or at least try that file name and see if it runs.

There can be plenty of relatively bogus entries in
Event Viewer, so don't panic. It takes some experience
to step over the "noise" in there, and spot messages
that are important, so don't be put off if this
"seems like a lot of work". It is a lot of work.
I don't know how many times I've closed that
thing in disgust :-) It's an acquired taste,
that's for sure.

I don't have a start orb. I have the four-paned windows icon on the lower
left of the taskbar, and to the immediate right I have.the Cortana circle,
which I click, and enter winver. It brings up the same thing as using the
run command: Windows 10 Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.15), as I mentioned in
my OP, yesterday. It still shows that, since I still haven't gone online. I
plan to explore some more, and then make a system image before going online.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment. But, my Dell laptop, which has a 1TB

can recall, shows something similar with respect to Disk 0 partition
numbering:

Yep, I can get into the event viewer by typing eventvwr in the Cortana hole.
It comes up as "Event Viewer - Desktop app". If I add the msc, Cortana says
"See web results" No thanks. If I run eventvwr msc in a run box, I get a
window that thinks I want to connect to remote computer "MSC. But, there's
also a bubble to click that will take me to this HP local computer. At any
rate, the Event Viewer has way too many categories/entries to look at let
alone understand. I don't mind hard work, but....

You need to reboot after doing DiskCleanup.

Only then will things be cleaned up.

Ok. This is interesting.

Clicking Disk Cleanup, before clicking Clean up system files, shows
Total amount of disk space you gain: 6.05MB, consisting of:

Downloaded Program Files 0 bytes (checked)
Temporary Internet Files 24.6KB (checked)
Devilery Optimization Files 128KB (unchecked)
Thumbnails 6.02MB (checked)
There are other unchecked files, but all are 0KB
Not much to gain from above..

After checking Clean up system files, Total amount of disk space you
gain shows 40.3MB, still not much to gain here.

But, scrolling down the entire list Previous Windows Installation(s)
shows 17.7GB unchecked. The description does say it is the Windows.old
folder, and I do notice that a Properties done on the WindowsOld folder
does show a similar Size of 16.7GB (even though StorageTemporary
FilesPrevious versioin of Windows shows 8.61GB...these inconsistencies
drive me nuts)

So, I'll check the Previous Windows Installation(s) and let things fly
and see how much space is gained.

After doing this, both Storage and Disk Management show only 12.1GB
free. Hmmm...I was supposed to gain 17.7GB. I'm happy to get this
space back, but again, this stuff drives me nuts.

Thanks for the reply.

You need to reboot after doing DiskCleanup.

Only then will things be cleaned up.

I did that. I did a shut down, and started over, but the same discrepancy
exists.
